we were told a cool mist as well. Actually my ped does not recommend warm mist humidifiers at all b/c of the mold risk. Instead she recommends taking DS into the bathroom after running a hot shower or steam shower (if you have one) and letting the steam in the room help.

Re: Has anyone used a warm mist humidifier for Croup?
Always cold mist as it helps to open up the bronchial tubes. Use it during the day & the night to really help it. Think of it as putting something cold to reduce swelling. The seal cough & gasp for air is real because while they can breathe in the air, the passages are closing, preventing the air from getting to the lungs. (sorry for scaring the bejesus out of anyone reading this).
It is the complete opposite of asthma (where you put the person over a pot of steaming hot water for a home remedy).
When my kids are going full force with croup, we usually have them wrapped in a blanket in the cool night air, open the freezer & hold them by it.

If you are supposed to use a cool mist humidifier why do they tell you to sit in the bathroom and run the hot shower for the steam?

steam in bathroom- run the hot shower.
then cold mist humidifier- that's what my ped recommended.
you can also let DC breathe in the cold air from the freezer- that helps constrict the tubes as well (or cold night air)

i think it is the combo of hot and cold that helps w/ the croup... and I heard warm mist humidifiers get moldy.
