Has Anyone Used Cellulose Insulation? Looking for feedback.
Recycled Cellulose insulation is environmentally friendly, made of 80-85% recycled newsprint. The manufacturing process of the cellulose uses one-fifth the energy of fiberglass and generates virtually zero emissions.
Has anyone put this kind of insulation in their home or no of anyone that has? We are thinking about using this and wanted some feedback. TIA!

What area of the house are you looking to insulate? Attic or exterior walls?
DH recently insulated our exterior walls with cellulose.

Re: Has Anyone Used Recycled Cellulose? Looking for feedback.
two exterior walls on the 1st floor and one interior wall to help with sound and the ceiling to help with sound.
How did he install it? from the outside or inside? Does your DH know if you would put this in a ceiling if the sheetrock already has to be up or not? We are completely remodeling this room and we have the walls down to the studs right now. Can you only blow this stuff in once the sheetrock is up? Thanks for your help.
ETA: and what made you go with cellulose vs. fiberglass?

We installed it from the inside using an insulation blowing machine. The walls were already finished (sheetrock) so we had to drill 2 - 1.5” holes in each bay (between the studs). One hole was 1ft down from the ceiling and the second was 3ft up from the floor (we have 8ft ceilings). We filled the bottom hole first, taped with duct tape, then topped off the bay from the upper hole. You need to tape off the bottom hole so the insulation doesn’t shoot out when filling the top hole. After all the bays were full we used “blowout patches” to cover the holes, spackled and re-painted. In all there were about 70 holes that needed to be patched. We only did the North West facing walls because of time constraints & it has always been the coldest area of the house in the winter months.
You can do it from the outside and I’d recommend it if you can. The cleanup would be soooo much easier. We couldn’t do it from the outside because there are multiple layers of siding that I didn’t feel like peeling off, plus its cold outside! LOL.
Does your DH know if you would put this in a ceiling if the sheetrock already has to be up or not?
You could put this in a ceiling that already has sheetrock up IF you have access to the ceiling from above. You could just blow it on top of the sheetrock and it will fill up but you need to take extra precautions if you have high hats installed.

Well if my walls were down to the studs I sure as H E L L would NOT have used the blow-in cellulose! Besides the fact that it won’t work with unfinished walls because it is loose fill insulation, it creates one heck of a mess! I think there is another type of insulation that you can blow into unfinished walls that actually sticks to the walls and studs, similar to the spray foam stuff. You would need a pro to install it though. Please do yourself a favor and just get the rolls of fiberglass, staple it up and be done with it!!
ETA: and what made you go with cellulose vs. fiberglass?
This one is simple. Why I went with loose fill cellulose: 1. Because my walls are already finished 2. There was basically zero insulation in the walls (60 year old Cape) 3. Got most of it done in 1 day with 3 guys 4. All materials were available locally (Lowes in Bethpage) 5. It cost me less than $150 for 7 bags of insulation, blower rental, pizza & beer!
Here is the installation guide from the manufacturer that I (loosely) followed:

Re: Has Anyone Used Cellulose Insulation? Looking for feedback.
We had it blown into the ceiling and walls of our 2-car garage a few years ago. We did the garage (which is unheated) only because we have 3 bedrooms that are above it and they were cold and drafty (wood floors). It made a huge difference upstairs, and it made our garage so well insulated it now sounds like a sound-proof room!
