Has anything ever been stolen from your desk/office?

If so, what did you do? Did you report it or let it go?

It wasn't anything of value, just a plain black pashmina shawl. I don't lock it in a drawer, I just fold it and put it on the corner of my desk. At first I was ******! How dare someone steal something from my desk! There are cameras on my floor so if I wanted to, I could have security watch the recording from last night. But why? For a shawl? It's really of no value to me. And then I also thought about WHY someone would steal something that really has no value. The only peple in the office after hours are the cleaning people so it made me think that they must need it more than I do and I certainly don't want someone to lose their job over a shawl.

Just wanted to get other people's thoughts.

a few years ago. A Camera was stolen out of one of my drawers.

ETA: i did not let it go at all... i went to HR and they gave me $200 for a new camera.

I'd report it to find out who stole it. You don't know, maybe they are stealing from other people too, and no one is saying anything.

Who's to say a forgotten cell phone, ipad or other expensive item won't be next.

Not to mention, if it is the cleaning crew, your company won't want to trust them with valuable company information, paperwork or their electronics around either.

nothing personal or of any monetary value

but

some papers were taken off my desk by a student which caused me a lot of stress when i was about 8 months pregnant. we found out who did it and let the school handle him.

Screw that.
If someone stole something- anything of mine- I'd want to report it/figure out who did it etc.

I don't buy the whole- they need it more than I do.

That is BS.
Stealing is wrong regardless.
Just because I have more than you does not give you the right to help yourself to my shyt.

I'd feel very violated and pizzed off.

Years ago I had my purse stolen right from under my desk. It was all caught on camera too. Guy came in once looked around (I wasn't at my desk), came back a minute later and took it.

Called the police and filed out a report. He did touch something on the desk but the police said they couldn't get his fingerprints from it

I had just cashed my paycheck too. My boss reimbured my check and more since I lost my beeper , wallet and everything in my bag including my car keys.
It was a PITA to re-key my car and my house.

Earlier in the year I had several items stolen from my desk. I teach in a Long Island high school.

I suspected one student and after that made sure my desk was completely bare during that class... sure enough it stopped.

When that student was transferred out of my class I warned all of his other teachers. Who just happened to be missing items as well

I lock up my purse, coat and personal items when I teach and always close all windows and lock my door even when I leave my room for 5 minutes.

I took serious issue with a custodian who opened my classroom during my lunch period and left the door unlocked Sorry, I don't trust anyone.

Our office has had numerous cleaning persons steal from us. We usually try to hire from within but it's hard to find trustworthy people. We've caught them on camera stealing ipods, cash, cameras, and they've all been fired. I'd definitely report it and let the higher ups decide whether they want to run the tapes. If they're willing to steal a pashmina, I wonder what else they're willing to steal.

Ok, maybe I will report it. I would feel worse knowing that other people might be missing things too and I didn`t do my part.

I once had a really nice digital picture frame that my DH bought me for our anniversary stolen from my desk at my previous office position. I mentioned it to my supervisor, and she said another co-worker was showing off her "new" digital photo frame that her daughter "gave" to her of her grandchild. We went over to her and casually asked to see the pictures of her grandson, when a picture of my DH and I popped up. She tried to say that I must have tampered with it, and that I was trying to set her up

Some protein bars. A co-worker was also missing their huge bucket of protein powder in their section.

We called HR and reported it.

Nothing could be done but yet we wanted to tell someone.

Common stolen stuff: umbrellas, candy, food, stapplers, paper weight, clocks, radios

Most common people stealing: cleaning crew at night.

I often buy cute stationary/post its.


It's cheap, but it still goes missing and irks me.

I haven't seen any of my co-workers using it which makes me suspect an aide may have swiped it since they often wander around our office. (I work in home care).

Yes. But, I work with emotionally disturbed students. Once I basically caught the girls stealing money. Another time I put 2 and 2 together quickly (I am super slueth) and figured out who stole my phone right away. Both times I got them back. Most teachers in my school never see their stuff again!

I dont own gadgets really... but this my hubby gave me. I used it to walk during lunch. I've had it for YEARS. came in and its gone. I left it on my charger.

I said something but my boss looked at me like "you're fault" and even said "our cleaning people are stellar" as to say how DARE i accuse them. I didn't .. I said its gone. *sigh*

YESSSSS. And not only that they decided to crazy glue things on my desk! They went in to my desk and got my crazy glue and glued my pictures down.

candy and food have gone missing from desk.


I had sent out a mass email when the crazy glue happened. It made me so mad because I was at work that night and had left late. We also had just got the entire office redone and i had a brand new desk.

THey tried to find out who it was because there was literally only like 3 people who it could have been.

A student stole a $100 from my wallet. He was the only one around who could have done it and yet, I couldn't accuse him since I "didn't have proof".

I actually just had a pair of gloves stolen...I didn't say anything. There are a lot of people who work in my building and its a very casual atmosphere. I'm annoyed by it, but there's no way the gloves are going to be located so I'm just taking it as a loss.

A memory card for my camera.

my coworker had her camera but her memory card was full, i took mine out and lent it to her so she could take pictures of her students. She gave it back to my coworker the next day who put it on my desk in a ziplock when I was absent and it was gone when I returned.

Our building was under a lot of construction so lots of workers were in and out. I am still upset about it because I had some pregnancy pictures on it. I have no other pics of being PG. I reported it, but there wasnt much they could do. I wish they would have looked at the security to see who was coming in and out of my room, but I think those tapes are recorded at a separate location.

My eye glasses were stolen fro my desk. I walked out of my office for a minute to go to the bathroom and they were gone. There was one other person in the office who claimed he did not see anything and had stepped out too. BS. I had to get new glasses. This was in college.
