Has Babycenter lost their minds!?!?!
I just really wish they'd let some people use their own common sense instead of publishing such alarmist stuff for the sake of content on their website...
Foods to avoid at 4th July BBQs
Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day • Pre-made salads: Steer clear of store-bought salads and side dishes that contain mayonnaise or egg-based dressings, like potato salad, some pasta salads, and coleslaw. They may have been improperly stored, and can harbor salmonella and listeria. Homemade salads with mayo and egg-based dressings are okay, as long as you know they've been properly prepared (with pasteurized or cooked eggs) and refrigerated, and haven't been left out in the sun.
• Hot dogs: It's safe to enjoy a hot dog, provided it's fresh off the grill or has otherwise been cooked until steaming hot (to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit) to kill bacteria that may be present. But because hot dogs are generally high in nitrates, as well as fat and sodium, they're best as an occasional treat.
• Burgers and other grilled meat or fish: If you're offered a burger or other grilled or barbecued meat, chicken, pork, or fish, make sure it's cooked well done and not pink in any areas. E. coli and toxoplasma can lurk in undercooked meats.
Note: Because of concerns about mercury in fish, the FDA recommends limiting yourself to 12 ounces (about two servings) of fish a week, and avoid some kinds of fish altogether. For more information, see our article on eating fish safely during pregnancy.
• Raw sprouts: Don't garnish your burger or salad with alfalfa or other raw sprouts. They can be an E. coli hazard.

Re: Has Babycenter lost their minds!?!?!
i don't think they are being alarmist... the only thing on here that i think is silly is this:
"• Hot dogs: It's safe to enjoy a hot dog, provided it's fresh off the grill or has otherwise been cooked until steaming hot (to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit) to kill bacteria that may be present. But because hot dogs are generally high in nitrates, as well as fat and sodium, they're best as an occasional treat."
i never understood the worry about hot dogs, my OB never said a word about them and i ate a lot during my first pregnancy.
all the other advice makes sense to me - eat food that you know hasn't gone bad and is cooked all the way through.

they should have titled it "how to be the most annoying guest at a bbq"
Can you tell me was this salad homemade ? Was this made with pastuerized eggs or do you have chickens in your backyard ? Also, could you tell me how long it sat out before it was refrigerated ?
I'll have a hot dog, but only if you can guarantee it's fully cooked.

You and me both! I haven't tried the honeymoon, but I LOVE blue moon, so I bet that one would make me quite happy too. That's the only time I get jealous of dh having a drink - when it's a beautiful pint of blue moon

NO PEANUT BUTTER! Someone nearby might have an allergy!
Actually, I've seen some homemade mayo-based salads at several events.... I would rather have store-bought....

Note to self: Delete the email from Babycenter.com when I get home. It fails to tell me anything I want to hear.
I follow my own rules. Rules which are loosely based on my OB's guidelines. I'm a rebel!

Re: Has Babycenter lost their minds!?!?!
I think there are so VALID concerns to be aware of when PG. Just like I would not eat a potato salad that stayed out for 2+ hours. Does anyone eat burgers that stayed out for a while? That's how people get sick. PG or not.
