Has your dog ever become scared of something?
I was away from Sunday afternoon through Wednesday night. (I do this about once a month for work.) Last night when I got home, my dog was so happy to see me. He then ran to the back door to be let out. I opened the door and he just stopped on the top step. He wouldn't go down. I went down the stairs and he still wouldn't move. I immediately thought someone was in our backyard and started yelling for DH. I walked into the yard and finally my dog followed me around. He wouldn't really leave my side. I just thought maybe something spooked him last night. DH got up for work this morning and went to let him out and he did the same thing. When I got up for work this morning, he did it too. I went outside and sat down in the lounge chair. He jumped on the chair and sat with me. I spoke with DH this morning and told him and he said he was fine the whole time I was gone. We have no idea why he just started doing this. Any idea what would have scared him? He would love going out and running around.

it could be a million things....
did you let him out right before you went away? he could be associating going out in the back with you leaving...
did he get hurt (splinter, cut) or trip going up or down the stairs recently or while u were away?
(no offence) does DH LIKE the dog? he didnt like throw him down the stairs or anything right? spray him with the hose?

Re: Has your dog ever become scared of something?
Whatever the reason, you deal with it the same so it doesn't matter why it's happened. Don't coddle your dog, and act completely normal. If he's showing body language that he's scared (ears back, tail under, head down), don't praise him or do baby talk or anything. Ignore him.
When dogs are scared, they want someone to be brave and show them there's nothing to be afraid of. He'll probably snap out of it in a couple of days, with the same routine.

My female dog is like this. Sometimes she gets spooked for days....
right now it's the fireworks she randomly hears. Maybe your dog heard one and is afraid to go out now?

Re: Has your dog ever become scared of something?
Just had a thought. Your dog might have been upset while you were away. When I had DD I was in the hospital for 5 days. When I got back, my female was very spooked and nervous. She did some weird things, such as not wanting to run in the yard, go out, etc, and even bit my other dog. Turns out we realized she was nervous and overwhelmed while I was gone...that explained her weird behavior. In a few days, she was back to her old self.
I bet it's just a spooked kinda thing b/c your dog was upset you were gone.

I don't know because I go away at least once a month. He loves being outside. DH is the one that brings me to the airport or train station so the dog is inside when I leave. I just hope he snaps out of it soon!

This is what I have been doing, showing him it's okay to be in the yard. I walk around and he follows. DH did the same when he came home from work too. I just hope one of the neighbors behind us didn't do anything to scare him.
