Have some general fever questions (and a coxsackie question too)
I've never dealt with high fever, etc so I have some questions
DD is 19 months and I think has coxsackie she has 101.9 AFTER Tylenol. She's already refusing foods, but has still been sipping water.
1) What fever is too high? High enough to call the ped at night or go to the hospital.
2) I always hear about alternating Tylenol and Motrin - how do you go about it? How many hours apart to you give it? I gave her Tylenol at 4 and Motrin at 8. When would I give Tylenol again since Motrin says every 6 - 8 hours.
3) If she's going to get the sores that often come with Coxsackie when would the appear?
4) How much fluid does she need to keep her from dehydrating? She already did 6 days in the hospital for dehydration this winter due to a stomach virus and I can not go through that ever again!!! I will force her to drink something!!! She's already refusing food.
TIA

Jen when it rains it pours. I've started to just accept it all and deal with the craziness. I just PRAY PRAY PRAY Jack doesn't get a fever I can not deal with him in the hospital. That will be the one thing that throws me over the edge.

Sorry your daughter is not feeling well. You can alternate tylenol and mOtrin to keep her fever down.
HOpefully Jack will not get it. HOpefully he will be ok since the two do not play together alot yet

Re: Have some general fever questions (and a coxsackie question too)
When Leah had cocksackie, she woke up with a high fever too. She went up as high as 102.6. I called the doc and the nurse said not to "worry" unless she got up around 104! It seems high, but I think infants/toddlers just get high temps. Leah drank a bit too, but didn't eat much. I kept giving her Tylenol to keep the fever down and it pretty much worked for her. It would go down to 99ish, but still bounce back when her next dose was due. Check her feet and hands for any sores. On Leah, they were just faint red marks but got darker over a few days. She did NOT have the marks on the same day that she had the fever, so they may not come for another day or two. See if you can get her to drink milk or a yogurt drink which might be a little thicker. This is just my BTDT advice, but if its gets worse, I would call the doc. Feel better Hannah and don't worry Momma

Re: Have some general fever questions (and a coxsackie question too)
What fever is too high? High enough to call the ped at night or go to the hospital.
105 is too high, and i would go to the hospital I call Ped at 103
2) I always hear about alternating Tylenol and Motrin - how do you go about it? I have always started with motrin and tried to wait 3 hours before giving tylenol. But it really depends on your DC. After giving which every one, check temp and hour later. If it went down i would wait. If it didn't or went higher i would give the other one.
3) If she's going to get the sores that often come with Coxsackie when would the appear? Nothing appeared that i could tell on my own. We had to go to the Ped and he looked down his throat with one of those tongue depressors. There were sores. My DS had no blisters on the feet or hands.
4) How much fluid does she need to keep her from dehydrating? The covering Ped said to me today, be concerned when the pee pee diapers stop. I on the other hand get upset when 2 bottles were missed.
You can do a search me and another poster had threads just the other day where there were a lot of good ideas on hydration. I think Pedialyte pops was a big hit for some
It is really tough on them but it gets better by the 3rd day.

Re: Have some general fever questions (and a coxsackie question too)
1) What fever is too high? According to my ped, there s no such thing as fever being too high. The body is fighting an infection, so you really don't have to worry about the fever part, just the hydration....
2) I always hear about alternating Tylenol and Motrin - how do you go about it? How many hours apart to you give it? I think every 2-4 hrs? I rarely do this so don't listen to me
3) If she's going to get the sores that often come with Coxsackie when would the appear? They appear right away
4) How much fluid does she need to keep her from dehydrating? try ice pops, or if worse comes to worse, I have used the medicine dropper to shoot fluid into Cailen's mouth
