Yes because I was white
Because I was Catholic...I worked at a Jewish day camp and I was wearing a cross one day and this 11 year old came over to me....got in my face, grabbed the cross almost off my neck and said "you're Catholic" and I said "Yes" and he said "I HATE you"!I also heard other counselors and campers saying that I had a lot of nerve wearing a cross to a Jewish camp!
Oh wow- awful!!! that reminds me! I can't believe I forgot- I was discriminated against because I'm Catholic. A Jewish guy asked me out, liked me, we dated and his parents told him that if he continued to date me past our one year anniversary that he would be cut off and they would disown him It was hard for me and I had some resentment for a while- towards his parents of course, no one else- but eventually I moved passed it.

i went to a summer camp in michigan for the arts and there were people there from all over the US and all over the world. one boy i became friendly w/ was from a small town near the finger lakes region of NY and had never met a Jewish person before. When he found out I was Jewish, he stopped being my friend.

Not so much racism- but more ignorance. While traveling in Louisiana with Jewish teen tour, a grown woman asked to see my horns. She wasn't being mean- she honestly thought that all Jews had horns
I very politely explained where that concept came from. oy vey!

I don't know if that's discrimination. But I can certainly understand why you would feel that way. I was never allowed to date anyone outside my fate. I probably can't explain it properly, but my parents (especially my father as the child of Holocost survivors) did not want what my grandparents, aunts and uncles lived through (and died for) go in vain. I may not be the most religious Jew, but my religion and my faith is VERY important to me, and I will probably bring my children up the same way. I certainly don't feel I am discriminating against anyone because of my beliefs and religion. I don't think or feel any bad thoughts or feelings against anyone and their beliefs or religions. I would not teach my children that other religions/races/beliefs are wrong because we are Jewish. I don't think anything is wrong with interfaith marriages, it's just not for me.
Hopefully this made sense.

please excuse my ignorance - but what is the deal with the horns? I have never heard of that?
It is so sad that there are HUGE sections of this country that think like this
Honestly, I don't know where the "idea" that Jewish people have horns came from-- My teacher never explained that part to us...
To this day, I have NO clue where that originated-- maybe Shelly can explain... I'm actually curious.
And yeah, it's SO sad.
In one of the translations of the bible, there was a mistranslation. Instead of it saying "And Moses came down from Mt. Sinai with rays of light" it was translated that Moses came down with horns. So when Michaelangelo made his sculpture of Moses, he included horns.
There spread the belief that all Jews had horns.

Re: have you ever experienced racism or discrimination?
My PR inlaws gave me a hard time but they are nutty.
My DH(PR), after he moved from PR, they always lived in "white" neighborhoods. Its amazing to see the difference between his life and mine.
When we go to stores, he ALWAYS announces that he is walking in with a bag or a return. I would never think to do this, the one time he didn't, they asked to check his bag.
It doesn't help that we live in NC-home of where illegals get their license plates. They seem to be on a hunt for him while he drives.
I could go on and on. He is so good though, just shakes it off.

Re: have you ever experienced racism or discrimination?
I don't know if it could be considered racism per se because it was against my religion (I'm Jewish) but I remember when a kid said a Jewish slur in class and didn't even realize I was Jewish. I didn't want to say anything to him because I was really shy and he was a jerk.

When I was graduating from college, Boston had a hiring freeze on white teachers. They were only hiring minorities and that is what brought me back to NYC!

I have.
I was up for a promotion, but they gave it to someone else because I didn't "fit the demographic of the area."

Re: have you ever experienced racism or discrimination?
Yes, on two levels - first because I'm jewish (someone told me, and mind you he was from a metropolitan area, "you're really nice and down to earth for a jew"), and second, sex discrimination.
The sex discrimination I've faced more than anything else - I ended up getting my college professor fired over it Most recently, when my old firm was taken over, they gave me 30% less than what other people were getting paid because "I was a new mom"
Oh yes, and disability discrimination - I was in 3rd grade when I was diagnosed - my mom made an appointment to discuss it with my 3rd grade teacher. We were all sitting together and when my mom told her, she turned to her and said, in front of me,
"Beth doesn't have a learning disability - she's just lazy"

You definitely made sense to me- I can totally understand where you are coming from. For me, personally, the family that I was refering to made it clear to me that I was inferior-- for you, your feelings are totally different- you are preserving your tradition and your culture and to me, that's something completely different. Your decisions are based off of you and how you feel- and their decisions were based totally on me, which was really unfair b/c it was like they had a hatred toward me for no REAL reason-- which is exactly what discrimination and racism is-- you don't know why you hate someone, there's no real reason for it- but you do... So, I understand where you are coming from- and you are not wrong in how you feel. They felt, IMO, differently than you did- it was more that I was not "good enough" b/c I was not Jewish- that I was not a good person in general either.
ETA: they were from Israel- perhaps this made it more extreme?? Just a guess.

It does make sense.
I can speak for myself in my choice for a partner was based on/in faith (we met on JDate) and not because I felt mine was any better than any other. I simply feel a responsibility, like you, to perpetuate a dying faith that was nearly eradicated just over 60 years ago. That doesn't make a person a racist, it makes them a believer and it allows them to teach their children what can happen from ignorance and intolerance.
Amazingly enough, DH and I were talking about travel (I dont like travel) and he asked me what I would like to see in Europe. When I told him Auschwitz and Anne Frank's Annex, he wasn't surprised at all. Someone has to retell the stories for the same reason Michelle spoke of. So that those who died did not die in vain and the words of those who survived can have deep meaning.
As far as the "horns" thing goes, I think it has morphed from the explanation of the Michelangelo painting into Jews being the Devil. That was always how it was portrayed to me and interpreted by others to me.
