Have you ever NOT cooked a turkey?

I just realized from the other thread, that I'm in my 30's and have NEVER cooked a turkey. Ever.

Thanksgiving has always been at my parents or another relative's so I have never had to.

I'm sure I will try................eventually..............Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever NOT cooked a turkey?

I never have. Thanksgiving is always at my parent's/uncle's or DH's parent's/aunt's house so I've never had to. Maybe one day!

I've never either, for the same reason. We've always went to family for thanksgiving. I would like to try though. It intimidates me for some reason, I'm afraid it won't come out right.

I've never cooked any meat. Been veg for 20+ years :)

Incidentally, I've never cooked a tofurkey either. IMO, Thanksgiving is all about the sides and dessert anyway! Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever NOT cooked a turkey?

Last year I hosted Thanksgiving and it was my first time cooking a turkey. I was so nervous I would mess it up.

Ya know what, it's one of the easiest things to make. And it came out delicious!

The secret is butter & cook it breast down to keep the white meat juicy. Lather that bad boy up with Butter, Salt & Pepper (even throw some butter under the skin) Cook it breast down and set the oven to whatever it says on the package.

I also think the smaller "young" turkeys are always better tasting.

Re: Have you ever NOT cooked a turkey?

I have.

We've spent many Thanksgivings by ourselves since all our family is in the Midwest, so we had to learn. I started with just the breasts but then we started getting small turkeys so we could have leftovers and cook the carcass for turkey noodle soup. It is really easy. I don't stuff it so I think that makes it easier to gauge if it's done.

I have never cooked a Thanksgiving turkey. I'm perfectly willing to do it, and my relatives are perfectly unwilling to travel up to my house for the holiday.

I have made a boneless turkey breast in the slow cooker, which is super easy and very good!

ETA: We always go to my mom's or DH's mom's, who made a Boston Market turkey last time. And I am 41. Chat Icon

I don't follow a recipe any longer- I use 2 jars of turkey gravy and a can of chicken broth. I season the liquid with rosemary, sage, thyme, which I don't measure Chat Icon But it's probably about a tablespoon or so of each. I cook it on high for 4-5 hours, usually it's a 3 lb boneless breast.

I tried to find the original recipe (DH was actually the one who found it) but couldn't- but there are actually a lot of recipes out there that sound good- a few even use wine which I never thought of. Chat Icon

I never have and I'm in 43! We always go to a family friend restaurant for Thanksgiving! Plus I am so not a cook that the thought of cooking an entire turkey for other people terrifies me!Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever NOT cooked a turkey?

I never have either. I have always either gone to my parents' house or my IL's. the 1st year DS was born, I wanted to stay in so I cooked a turkey breast, just enough for DH and I.

Re: Have you ever NOT cooked a turkey?

DH and I started to host thanksgiving three years ago - this will be our third year. Both our families come over and I do all the cooking. I was terrified of messing up turkey first time - but it wasnt that bad at all. I kept brushing it with the juices in the pan for the whole time it was in the iven. No complaints yet!
