Re: Have you ever saved someone's life or called 911 and assisted a person in "danger"?

When I was about 18 years old, a teenager was hit by a car in front of our house on the Jersey Shore. The driver kept going. I never thought I could react so fast and without even thinking. (I was a trained lifeguard, but never had to save someone on the job by that point.) He was bleeding out and had a massive head injury. I took off my clothes to help put pressure on the wounds. I rolled him to his side as he threw up blood. I never even thought about what I did. I won't go into all the details.

My brother came along the scene a few minutes later and went to help (since he was trained too), but he backed off when he saw I was in charge. I couldn't believe when he told me that he was impressed by his little sister and left me in charge.

The next day I found out that it was actually one of the guys I played beach volleyball with everyday. I'm glad I had no idea it was someone I knew. And I was also glad to find out he was doing okay and they caught the damn driver.

As a lifeguard, I did save some people, but that just comes with the job. But I did save a guy from drowning when I was PG. The lifeguards were too busy flirting to see the guy went under water and was drowning. After I got him, I gave a good tongue lashing to the guards. Chat Icon

I was a volunteer EMT for 3 years, a volunteer AEMT (Paramedic) for 6 years, and worked in hospitals and private ambulance companies for 2 years.

I could tell you stories, boy howdy. Chat Icon

In addition to the volly and professional work, I've also stopped at car accidents to help, done CPR on my neighbors, stopped someone from choking in a restaurant, and taught children CPR. One of them saved her Mom's life less than a year later.

You never know how you will act in these situations, but I do feel that everyone, especially parents, should be certified in CPR at least once in their lives. So if given the chance, we can all be heroes to our loved ones and strangers alike. Chat Icon

Re: Have you ever saved someone's life or called 911 and assisted a person in "danger"?

I have, when I lived in DC I used to walk from work to my gym via dupont circle. One day I was on my way to the gym when I saw this man turn purple right in front of me. He was having a heart attack. I caught his head so it did not fall on the granite floor. Near the metro stop is this granite bench and floor. I removed his tie, loosened his shirt, checked for a pulse. Screamed for someone to call 911 and then began chest compressions. These two men came to my aid and then assisted with the breathing and after my 5 minutes of compressions took over for me b/c I was tired. I then rifled through the guys bag for his cell phone and called his wife. I told her what hospital he was being taken to but never gave my name. I called the hospital the next day and they said he was alive. I chose not to talk to him but was glad that he lived. I also left what must have been the strangest VM on his office phone hoping he had an assistant to answer. He worked for the US Department of Education.

Me, personally, no. But, hubby saved a little boy's life this past weekend, recussitating him with CPR after he drowned in a pool.

Re: Have you ever saved someone's life or called 911 and assisted a person in "danger"?

Something like this just happened to my brother and I am so proud of him.

He is in the Navy and works in Crash & Salvage (basically he is a flight deck fireman). He is trained in CPR and other lifesaving tech's.

He was driving home a few weeks ago with another friend in the navy when a motorcycle up ahead lost control and crashed. He pulled over to find people out of their cars, but not doing anything for the guy.

My brother started CPR while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. My brother worked and worked on the guy. Unfortunately the man died in my brothers arms.

It has shaken him badly, but I am so proud of him for stopping and doing what he did. The man was wearing a helmut, but my brother thinks he may have broken his neck.Chat Icon

I don't remember his name, but he was Caucasian, about 6 feet tall, very slender, perhaps 150 lbs, with salt and pepper (more pepper though) curly black hair. If I saw his picture I am 100% sure I could ID him though.

ETA: This occurred in the summer of 2001.

Neighbor Rescues Woman From Burning Home

The upstairs tenant in a home located on Wishing Lane escaped the burning house and ran to the house next door. Michael M*** was asleep and the pounding on his door awakened him. This was at about 6am in the morning. The tenant said the house next door was on fire.

According to Michael , the home was engulfed in flames and smoke and he was told the elderly owner was still inside. Michael rushed toward the burning structure. He kicked in the front door and entered the burning house all the while fighting back severe smoke. Michael found the woman lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. With the assistance of off-duty correction officer Kevin Imm, the pair was able to get the woman safely out of the burning structure.

She was transported to Nassau County Medical Center by the Hicksville Fire Department Ambulance. She was treated for smoke inhalation and released.

The fire was contained by the Hicksville Fire Department with assistance from Bethpage

Re: Have you ever saved someone's life or called 911 and assisted a person in "danger"?

I "saved" my friends little sister from drowning in a lake.

her older brother and another friend thought it would be funny to throw a 75 lb girl as far as they could....they didn't realize how deep the water was and figured she could swim (they aren't swimmers themselves Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon )

we were all fully dressed in super absorbent cotton sweats...her clothes made her too heavy to swim all the way back to the dock and she started going under.

I had the same problem when I jumped in...both she and my clothes were weighing me down (I didn't think to take them off)...we made it back in the nick of time b/c I don't think I could have swam more than a few more feet...I thought *I* was going to drown saving her.

I was not trained as a lifeguard and I think that could have been my ruin. that's why I want to get certified...so I can be brave and trained instead of brave and stupid.

it's awesome what so many of you have done!!!

I saved my own mothers life about 3 different times.

Once when she went on a ride with me and freaked out about the height.

The second time she was having an allergic attack to something in a pita wrap from Wendys.

The third, I cant go into detail, but I literally saved her from being killed.

No, never saved anyone's life.

I have called 911 several times for things like an elderly person standing out in zero degree weather with a thin house coat (I was assuming there was some confusion/Alzheimers or something in play), some guys in ski masks sitting in front of the 24 One Stop, etc.

My roommate at one point in college was diabetic. She slipped into a diabetic coma on our couch in the middle of one night while I was in my room sleeping. I had to call 911 and also the special animal squad also had to come. Her great dane wouldn't let anyone- including me- near her.

When I worked at a small grocery store in high school I chatted a lot w/a regular customer who rode a bike because he was epileptic. One day he came in & was acting WEIRD (spaced out, etc). He wouldn't let us call 911, but I saw he was struggling to walk/get on his bike & I didn't want him riding down & crossing the busy main road so I called anyways & then went outside to take his bike away & distract him until the ambulance came. It turns out that he had a massive, massive seizure shortly afterwards in the ambulance. About a week later he came back in with a big bouquet of flowers & thanked me for saving his life...I feel like I just did what anyone would do, but he was so grateful & would tell other customers for the next few years how I had saved his life Chat Icon

No but DH's partner saved his life when he had his accident at work.
No doubt in my mind if he didn't stay level headed and call 911 DH wouldn't be here today. Not only did he call 911, he wrapped his head and pulled him out of danger.
We will be forever grateful to that man
