Have you refused baby products offered by friends/family?
I was offered a crib and some other items from friends and family who no longer need their baby products.
Is it rude to refuse those items? We're refusing mainly because we've heard that certain items become outdated and don't meet the new safety requirements/standards. Or, the item we were offered don't match our nursery decor..
TIA.

So far no one's offered us anything bigger than a onesie. But I would do the same thing. Plus, I kinda like the idea of starting fresh with everything chosen by us as far as furniture and bedding. But to each his own.

Unless safety standards have changed for some reason, I welcome anything that is used and in good condition.

Re: Have you refused baby products offered by friends/family?
I haven't been offered anything, and I really don't want anything. I know the one thing the Baby Bargains book said to not take as a hand me down was a crib. (safety reasons). I want to start off with everything new. This is my first baby, and I don't want hand me downs until at least my second one.

MIL wanted us to use her 60 year old cradle or FIL's 65 year old bassinet. We said no thank you. My gift at the shower she threw was the old cradle.

the only thing I have turned down so far is a rocker/glider. It is just not my style - not what I wanted at all. Its a number of years old and just not as comfy as the new ones and the color/style is not mine at all.
Other than that - I am taking everything that has been offered - high chairs, snap and go, clothes, etc.

Re: Have you refused baby products offered by friends/family?
my mother offered us my crib (and my sisters') that was 28 years old. it's perfectly good, in great condition, and meets all current safety standards, but i really wanted "new" stuff for DS. she was fine with it, she just created a nursery in her house for him!
as far as clothes, most of the stuff that my mom had was for girls, so we took the "neutral" things that were still in good condition, i don't see anything wrong with hand me downs.
i wasn't offered hand me downs from anyone else but i would have gladly accepted them - baby stuff gets expensive because they keep growing out of them!!

My cousin offered me stuff from her kids who are 9 and 6. I politely declined.
I have no problems with hand me down's. My MIL and DH have a real problem with them though. My MIL has a problem with everything though...LOL Not sure what DH's problem is with this.

Re: Have you refused baby products offered by friends/family?
My aunt who has 4 kids, has offered us all of the baby things she has. Im talking cribs, to clothes. I very nicely told her since it was our first, I wanted new baby things, that was half the fun was the shopping. Im just not big on using other peoples things like that.

Re: Have you refused baby products offered by friends/family?
My dad wanted us to use my old crib!
I'll take any hand me downs, though. My cousin had a baby a year and a half ago and gave us a ton of stuff. A pack and play, stroller, swing, a play mat, a car seat with an extra base (we're not using the car seat b/c it's pink), and a bunch of unopened bottles, nipples, pacifiers, a diaper bag, an insulated bottle holder, and I don't even remember what else. Most of those things I'll use but some things I won't.
