having a birthday party BEFORE the birthday...do you or don't you?

so, I was originally planning on having Luce's first birthday on October 23 (he was born October 20) but I just found out we are invited (and almost certainly going) to dh's cousins wedding in Spain.

she lives there and has very limited family that could go so he really wants to be there.

but...that leaves the only logical day for Luce's birthday as October 16.

four days before his actual birthday.

I absolutely HATE the idea of it. it makes me so nervous and crazy...celebrating something before it happens. I (irrationally) feel like I am tempting fate!!!!!

but we both feel that having the party after (October 30) is also an issue b/c of halloween.

and going after that....well, that's almost 20 days after the fact.

help me.

You're celebrating his birth, it doesn't have to only be on that exact date - KWIM?

I vote for the 30th. I too don't like bdays celebrated before the fact. I wouldn't worry about halloween, most people celebrate that on the actual day. Luce's bday will be extra-extra special no matter what day you pick and maybe you'll even find some super-cool bday stuff in Spain Ahhh, how I long to return to Madrid for some shopping! They had some great baby stuff too.

We are in the same situation bc DS#2 will be born 1-2 days after JJ's birthday. We are looking at doing his 1st birthday either the weekend of (Labor day) or two weeks prior

I have done it.
If you're truly not comfy doing it, then, do it after. I had DDs party about 10 days after her bday due to schedules.

We're celebrating DS' b-day before the big day since the following weekend is Christmas and then New Years.

4 days before is not too far off from his actual bday.. it wont be so bad.
i know what you mean though
but look at it this way, have the big family party 4 days before his acutal bday and then on his bday you can do something with just the 3 of you!

I am not superstitious. I had Landon's party a week before this year, and 3 weeks late last year. Close enough!

I say do it before. We did DS 1st B-day 2 weeks before the actual day because we wanted a backyard party and felt we'd have better weather doing it early.

I am not a superstitious person but I agree with you, I don't like celebrating something before it's happened. I'd do it on the 30th, I think a Halloween themed party would be fun!

I've done parties before. Sometimes it's the only time that works.

He was born and that is what you are celebrating.

Every birthday is a celebration after that event so there is no jinxing!

ETS: The only celebration ahead of time was your baby shower and that worked out so no worries!

We have always done birthdays on whatever day is most convenient. Before or after. I never even give it a second thought. You can't live life by what if's.

Ive one DDs party before her bday and I also remember celebrating my own bday early as a kid. whenever is convenient right before or right after I think is fine.

I would do the weekend before. Will also be much easier for you to plan everything before you go to spain. We are also in a similar situation- my sister is getting married 9/25 and I'm MOH. DD's bday is 9/23. We are having her party 9/18.

We are planning on doing DS's first birthday party the weekend before his actual birthday because on the actual day I want to spend it just the 3 of us and having a smaller cake just for him.

I had my DD party before her actual birthday. She is born a few days before Christmas, so her family parties will always be held before her actual birthday. I'm not superstitious about it at all. Good luck!

DS's 1st birthday will be on Thanksgiving this year. We will be holding his party before his birthday.

I agree with you 100%...wait until the 30th, I think its cool to have it around Halloween!
