HAWAII HELP PLEASE!!

If you were going for 7 days and were going to just one island, which would it be?

Where would you stay? What would you do as far as activities/sights?

THANKS!! Chat Icon

Re: HAWAII HELP PLEASE!!

Maui-

it has a good balance of isolation and lots to do. We went in August and went to Maui, Kauai, and Oahu. Kauai was my favorite, but it didn't have as much to see/do as Maui.

You could also do a day trip to other islands. Aloha air is pretty cheap, and the flight is only a half an hour or so, depending on which islands you are hopping to.

On Maui you can take surf lessons, the road to Hana, Bike down Haleakala (the volcano) and see the sunrise on Haleakala. you MUST go to a luau!

Have fun - you will LOVE it!

eta: on Maui we stayed in Ka'anapali at the Hyatt - there is a row of hotels over there. the Hyatt was BEAUTIFUL.

I couldn't have said this better myself (except we didn't get to do the Haleakala bike because of bad weather).

We stayed in Ka'anapali at the Westin and loved it!

I agree. Lots to do on Maui or not do if you choose. We stayed at the Kea Lani and it was great!

I feel like I wrote this! I stayed on the same islands and Kaui was my favorite. I also stayed at the Hyatt's on both islands. If you are going for a week, Maui is the way to go. There is a lot to do, and you still get the isolation feeling of Hawaii. DH and I really loved Kaui, but there is no night life, and not as much going on as Maui. It is truly the most beautiful place I have ever been, and I travel a lot. The Hyatt is fantastic!! If you have the money, you can stay on the Waliea side which has the Fairmont, Four Seasons, and the Grand Waliea. We visited the Grand Waliea while we where their, and it is a amazing hotel, but expensive.
If you stay at the Hyatt, make sure you get the package that includes breakfast and car rental. Food is expensive, and breakfast in the hotel will cost you $50 for two. This is just buffet breakfast.

We also did the bike down Haleakala which was amazing and I reccomend 100%. Unfourtnetly I heard that they no longer offer this. Something about too many people dying. It is so easy to stay with the group and on the road, but there is always that one in the group, if you know what I mean. They actually made us test the bikes before we went and if anyone looked like they where having trouble, they had to ride in the van on the way down. We used a company "Bike it Maui", if they are still running. They where a little more money, but a smaller group and they took you to breakfast at the end. Fm if you have anymore questions.

Hands down - Maui is the way to go. I agree 100% with what the PP said.

I went to Kauai, Oahu, and Maui and Maui was BY FAR my favorite. Lots to do and BEAUTIFUL sites.

If I ever go back to Hawaii I will just go to Maui.

Definitely Maui. It was my favorite island and the most diverse. The pace and feel of the island just makes you fall in love. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We stayed at the Marriott in Wailea. It is right next to the Grand Wailea. It was an amazing hotel and less expensive than some of the more popular hotels.

Re: HAWAII HELP PLEASE!!

i have to disagree w/the other posters. I went to Kauai & Maui for my HM and we LOVED Kauai. True that there is much more to do on Maui but its also a lot more commercial. We were in Kauai for 4 nights and easily could've stayed another two or three. If you do go to Kauai, I highly recommend the Grand Hyatt Kauai -- OMG -- amazing!!!

In Maui, we stayed at the Hyatt Regency which was nice but IMO (and I tend to be picky b/c I work in the travel industry) it could use a facelift. I did see the Westin though, (public space only) and thought it was much nicer. I can't speak about the other hotels since I didn't see them.

You're going to have the best time!!!!

Re: HAWAII HELP PLEASE!!

It totally depends on what kind of person you are. We went on our honeymoon for 3 weeks to Oahu, Maui, The big island, and Kauai. We fell in love with Kauai and spent 6 weeks there last summer. It is quieter, hiking, greener, no real night life. Oahu is famous for Honolulu which is a big city if you like that. It also has the north shore which gives you the more country part of Hawaii. The big island has great snorkeling and it the biggest of all the Hawaiian islands. It is mostly black in color from the volcanic rock. Maui has the nightlife and the traffic in certain areas. THe road to Hana is there. Every island has its own uniqueness. Feel free to fm for more info. I am in love with Hawaii and want to move there but DH won't. :o)

Re: HAWAII HELP PLEASE!!

Depends. Maui is more commerical, but lots of activites: luau, Haleakala, Hana, etc. - But Kauaui has lots of pretty sits and is gorgeous and relaxing. I've never been to the Big Island but here that is awesome too - I think it depends on what you like to do. Have fun!

Re: HAWAII HELP PLEASE!!

it depends on what you are looking to do. if you want more relaxation i would go with kauai. if you want more activities i would do maui. below are my recommendations for each island -

kauai - stay at the hyatt (it is paradise!). we did some exploring of the island - secret beach is gorgeous. we also did a snorkel trip of the napali coast - so amazing. we saw tons of spinner dolphins swimming around our boat.

maui- stay at either the hyatt or the four seasons. we did a snorkel trip in the molikini crater (sunken crater off the coast of maui). visibility is excellent. the road to hana is great to do once - tons of waterfalls, etc. i would also recommend sunrise at the top of haleakala.

I would say Maui. Even though it's more commercialized there seemed to be a lot more things to do and see, especially at night. Kaui was really nice too but it's "slower" and more of nature's beauty. Not much to do at night though.

We're definitely more "out to dinner" people than "bar-hopping partying" peeps so I don't think "nightlife" would even make a difference in our decision making.

I definitely want to go to a luau and do some of the nature-y/tourist things but I guess I'd like to relax and enjoy being on the beach as well.

we loved Big Island! we just preferred that it was less crowded and many times we felt like we are the only people in the world... Big Island has a lot to see: beautiful valleys, beaches, volcanoes, I think there is something for everyone there...

definitely Kauai then!!!
There is so much to do there during the day. We rented a car and explored the whole island. We went hiking, went to the beach, went kayaking, went on a rainforest hike/tour, did the helicopter tour, went to a luau, went to the canyon, etc.

ITA. We loved Kauai much better than Maui. IMO Maui could have been Florida it was commercialized. Kauai felt like we spent 12 hours on a plane
