HD vs. Lowes or others for kitchen remodel?
Does anyone have any recommendations for where to go for kitchen redesign?
We had an appt. at Home Depot, but we weren't too impressed with the designer when we went in to meet her. We really want someone to give us suggestions on how to maximize the space (smallish kitchen) and what our options are. The HD lady just asked us what we wanted but didn't really suggest anything. I feel like if we're paying that much money for a kitchen, we want to get the best possible solution for our space
Any suggestions on where else we can look? Has anyone had experience with Lowes? Sears?
We're trying to keep the entire budget under $20K. We will be gutting the room, but keeping the existing appliances. We're in Nassau, south shore
TIA!

Try Consumers. But remember you have to install yourself or get a contractor to install. Consumers only sells the cabinets.

Do they have people there that you can work with to do the contracting? we def. want the whole package deal.

We were very happy with Lowes. If you go to the one in garden city ask for Michelle.

They might be able to recommend a contractor but you definitely won't be talking about install prices there.
You might be best to look through the pennysaver at any of the "remodeling" companies that do kitchens/baths/etc. and talk to them and see what they offer.
Ask them what it would cost to install cabinets per linear foot if you supply the cabinets.

I forgot to add, one thing Consumers will price out an install for are countertops.
But cabinets you have to get somebody to do the work for you.

Try Ikea Kitchens. Even if you dont like their quality (which is good for the price), you can meet with a rep and they will set up the kitchen for you in the style you want on their computer design. They are very knowledgable and helpful.

Not Lowes or Home Depot...they are a rip off. I priced granite from them and they wanted $88 sq. ft. I went to a granite store in Freeport and it was $48 sq. ft.

Honestly, I would go to a different designer for HD or try Lowes. It really does depend on who you happen to get. Also you can get a design from one place and take that design and get the cabinets somewhere else. I know that Kraft maid ( a brand from Consumers and HD) is cheaper at HD. As far as installation, I agree with a pp. Go thru the penny saver of try Craigs List. Both HD and Lowes are seriously over priced.

We are also doing our kitchen over right now.
Consumers was the best and gave us the best design.
Home Depot gave us an OK design. Nothing special.
Lowe's was a nightmare but I blame that on the designer. He was 80 years old and did not know how to use the computer properly. I was telling him what to do. DH and I walked out.

My dad does custom kitchen cabinetry- you can check him out at www.dynamickitchenfurniture.com www.dynamickitchenfurniture.com (i built the website- so it isn't THAT fancy and we are still getting photos up) for what he gives you for the money- you really get a lot.. better material, SELECT wood (you don't typically get that at HD or Lowes)- and TONS of add ons like: 3/4" construction same wood/color inside AND out $5 allowance cost on hardware pull-out shelves lazy susan flip-out soap tray for under sink pull-out garbage pail crown molding 176 degree German hinges.. AND his product is guaranteed against manufacturer defects for as long as you own it!
edited to add we just ran an ad in Newsday- 10% off custom kitchen order if you mention ad- so you can mention it and save (and no, he doesn't raise the price just to give the discount- he's honest)
