healing your nails after Gel manis

I've been w/o gel polish going on 3 weeks now. I've been using OPI gel break and Nailtiques level 2 protein formula.

My nails start to grow and then split down the middle. They are still weak so i know it will take time. But anything else good I can do to make them better?

I also have cuticle oil I rub in every day.

I don't do gel often (usually only for vacations) because of how damaged my nails are after. Anytime I do them though, after I don't put any polish on them and just let them breathe. I also moisturize the nail beds a lot and at night I usually rub coconut oil on them and then moisturizer.

I’m really curious what gel you used? I get a shellac mani every other week and my nails are fine. Way back when, when I used to do wraps and acrylics (!) they would destroy my nails but I have noticed zero problem with the shellac.

I used to use nailtiques when I would take the wraps off.

I use the CND shellac on a rare occassion and I find what damages my nails is the acetone to remove it. It's very harsh.
However, one time I was talked into the powder dip and not only did I hate how it looked (SOOO thick and just gross and fake looking) but when it came off it destroyed my nails to the point they wouldn't grow for a year. They were soft and splitting and peeling. It was terrible.

I agree with Nell and it’s not the actual gel but the process of taking it off
Soaking for a long time and filing the top of my nails def did some major damage to my nails

The best thing for my nails has been pregnancy Chat Icon

In all seriousness though, my nails were literally destroyed from a powder gel mani. Even just ONE was enough to ruin them. I found the best thing was to just not use anything on them for as long as possible. No manicures, etc... just letting them be.

That’s exactly what I am doing now
It’s torture! I normally go every two weeks but I’m over it and my nails are horrendous! It’s been about a month and they are finally getting better. I just keep cutting them short since they are paper thin

My nails are beautiful, long and healthy. I only do gel and get it done every 3 weeks. Sometimes I take a break and my nails are pretty much normal. My nail tech only uses Le chat perfect match and Wavegel Matching gel polishes. I would stay away from all powders, my nail tech say gel polish is less damaging. For me I’ve had no damage.

In the past, going to other nail techs I did have thin papery nails when I took the gel off.

CND Vinylux is great and you only need non-acetone remover to get it off. It also lasts forever when you use it with the Vinylux top coat (no base coat). I did my nails last Tuesday and no chips yet. I’m really surprised.

To OP: I’ve never used anything to repair my nails. I just let them breathe for a week or two if I feel they might be a bit weak. Extra water and hydration will also help.
