Healthcare in the United States
Makes me Some of the WORST business practices I have ever seen. Why must everything be a fight? What other companies (besides hospitals) is it completly acceptable to leave people on hold for twenty minutes (everytime they call) Why is healthcare in america not easier? I am lucky in that I have fight in me, who is helping the poor elderly of this country who can't fight for themselves? I guess this is more of a rant than anything else.

Good luck and give 'em hell!
All I can say is that my great aunt in Italy (92 years old) is in a nursing home that is nicer than my house and is treated like a queen. When DH saw pictures she recently sent of herself at the home, he was like - everything made of marble, open, beautiful garden, etc. Makes you think.

Re: Healthcare in the United States
I want to join this rant. In fact, I ranted last week on LIW about doctor's offices, confusion over insurance coverage, etc. I'll rant regardless of which board it is on. If there is no audience, I may be too busy ranting to notice.

Here is a weird question. Why do they call it a soap box and what if I do not have one? I'll stand on my step stool and rant!!!

Re: Healthcare in the United States
what is origin or the phrase on "my soap box"
soap was delivered to stores years ago in sturdy wooden crates, which were recycled for many purposes (e.g., the Soap Box Derby, where children once made racing cars by attaching wheels to the basic box. Nowadays of course, their parents fund fiberglass molds for body parts, etc.) But one of the best uses for a soap box was as a portable "stage" for an orator to stand on, to rise above a crowd and make speeches. It was democracy at its most basic: get on your soap box, and harangue the assembled listeners.
Love the info on the web! I can help you build one if you like...actually I probably have enough I could just give you one.

Ooh, an etymology question. Love it! From Wikipedia:
The term originates from when speakers would stand on a wooden box meant for holding soap. The term is also used metaphorically to describe a person engaging in often flamboyant impromptu or unofficial public speaking, as in the phrases "He's on his soapbox", or "Get off of your soapbox." Hyde Park, London is known for its Sunday soapbox orators, who have assembled at Speaker's Corner since 1872 to discuss religion, politics, and other topics.
Oops, Deb, you beat me to it. I'm new 'round these parts - I have to learn to type faster!

Re: Healthcare in the United States
The today show has something on this very topic today! 30 million people fight with insurance every year. 30 million? Really, what other industry could have that many people fight against them and lasts? It's a scam, all a scam!

Re: Healthcare in the United States
OOh there is a book 101 health insurance tips! By a woman named Michelle Katz
Says make sure you appeal- Insurance might not have adequate info or that it might be coded wrong.
Other tips- Get copies of everything from prescriptions to medical records and all of that.
Notify your doctor ahead of time, if you are getting denied, so are they. The doc might be able to make an appt and argue your case ( for instance showing why it ismedically necessary)
Alert the "watchdogs" Every state has Insurance Commisioners and the attory general or have your doc write to the medical board.
If all else fails, get an attorney

Re: Healthcare in the United States
Its terrible.
I remember after I got married, my mother in law calling me from Israel saying that DH never signed up for the national health care and didn't know about it. I told her that there is no such thing in the US. She was shocked!
How can the "leader of the free world" not provide health service for thier own people. The poor can get it- the rich can afford it- but what about the rest of us.

Wow that really is sad! I know we are lucky that we have access to some of the best trained doctors plus the best equipment/techniques in the world, BUT, why does it have to be so hard for people to get/afford the treatment we need!

Making money > then giving somone some inexpensive medicine
Pharmaceutical Companies (sp) are FOR PORFIT, (and the medicine is FAR from inexpensive) Insurance Companies are FOR PROFIT, (and I'm talking Health Ins., Malpractice Ins, and any additional Ins. the hospital may have to carry god forbid someone scrapes their knee walking into the building and decides to sue) HOSPITALS are NOT FOR PROFIT - yet they have to incur all of these costs plus ...........so the hospital isn't making a dime - It's all of the other FOR PROFIT organizations they have to write a check to that are sucking this country dry - Way to go George W ...........

I work in hospital finance and I completely agree with the above. You have no idea what WE go through to get payment from the insurance companies. They are constantly changing the rules on us and NOT notifying us, creating mystery "fee schedules" and limits on charges, all the while denying our charges and NOT telling us why!
I call it the "Full Employment Act" for insurance companies and hospital/dr's billing departments.

Re: Healthcare in the United States
Bumping this thread because I read an article on CNN.com about this topic. They interviewed a family who said their insurance company refused to pay for $200,000 worth of medical bills. After a lot of fighting they were able to reverse almost all of the denials, and give some advice.
Alot of it is similar to what DebG wrote already, but it's an interesting article. For example, they say be careful what words you use, like for cleft palate, don't say it's for cosmetic reasons, say it's to help the child chew/swallow.
Here is a link to the article.
