Heckscher State Park

I live out east and my friend lives more west. We decided to meet at Heckscher State Park as a middle point. I have never been And neither has she. Any suggestions on a particular entrance or where would be best to go with four kids ranging in ages from 8 to 12. We’re packing a picnic lunch and a soccer ball, etc. I appreciate any suggestions! TIA!

Heckscher State Park

We are actually just leaving there, now. As far as I’m aware, there’s only one way in & out- it’s the last exit on the Southern State Parkway East. The roadway through the park is basically set up in a loop There are picnic areas, fields, and basketball courts dotted throughout. There are 3 or 4 beach parking fields, but during the week, only the 1st one you get to is open. The beaches are narrow (the distance between parking & the water), I believe the body of water they open to is the Great South Bay (?) so there aren’t really any waves; there are lifeguards & all of the bathrooms we passed by were open. The playgrounds are closed & taped off. It’s $10.00/car, to enter & park, until 4:00. It’s pretty, clean, and quiet. We live in the city & drove out for a little beach time today.

I usually park in field 7 I think. It's the one along the water so you would be on the beach. I think (don't quote me) field 3 and 4 is more park like parking.

Bring mosquito repellent - were there for 45 mins on Sunday but left because we were getting eaten alive. Today I have at least 30 bites all over my legs.
