HELP---7 week old no appetite for 2 days

DS is almost 7 weeks and for the last 2 days he has been refusing his bottles and when he is drinking them, he screams the whole time. He went from drinking 3 ounces every 2-4 hours to drinking 1 to 1 1/2 ounces every 2-4 hours. He just spit up and it was yellow and thick. He is on Elecare for a severe milk protein/ soy allergy. His GI said that he had very mild reflux. I am thinking that the reflux is now really bothering him. I don't know what to do. He is so miserable. He is hungry but can't eat. What should I do? I called the pedi and am waiting for a call back. The pedi GI closed at 4pm...

I have heard about them. If I don't get anywhere with the Pedi, I will go up there.

Why would he spit up yellow and thick?? is it possible he has a cold and is congested and it is too hard to suck and swallow?

We were at the pedi yesterday and he told us that his nose and chest were clear. He is coughing a little bit and has been drooling a lot more then usual today. I am probably worrying about nothing, but with all the issues he has been having with his belly due to the milk protein/soy allergies, I am really starting to freak out...

My DD has a milk allergy as well and before she was on the elecare she would cry and scream during and after feedings. She also has silent reflux which hapens to be more uncomfortable for her. She does NOT spit up so the formula comes up and goes back down which burns her throat. She has been put on zantac. So the combination has worked wonders. I would call GI in the a.m. about the yellow spit up and express how he is upset during feedings. He possibly may have the reflux. It won't hurt to try axid or zantac to see if you see improvement. Good luck. Wish our little ones could tell us what is wrong.

Our pedi just called back and said there was nothing he could do. That DS was possibly just going through a phase and refusing the formula. The big problem is that we don't have any other options for formula. I am going to call the Pedi GI in the morning. He was diagnosed with mild reflux a while back and put on Mylanta...

I would ask what indicates "mild" reflux. Every baby does have some reflux but if your baby is very uncomfortable by screaming and refusing formula I would think he may need something more than mylanta for his reflux. Go with your gut instinct. Tell them you want to try something different. These are safe medications so your not going to do harm by giving it to you DS.

Re: HELP---7 week old no appetite for 2 days

If you think something is wrong then I would go with your gut and call the GI doc in the morning. I've never heard of a 7 week old going through a no-eating phase. You know your baby better than anyone else. Do you like your Ped? If not I would find a new one. I'm not liking that your doc said there's nothing he/she can do - he can at least give you some advice.

I hope things get better tonight or at least that tonight is not too bad. Just hang on until the AM. If you become more concerned either call the doc at the emergency number or if you think you need to, go to the hospital. Is your DS having wet diapers? Just want to check that he's not getting dehydrated. Chat Icon

I am debating on whether or not I should take him to the pm pediatric place. I don't know if he or I can handle the rest of the night like this....

Go with your gut. If you think there is something wrong, go. The worst that happens is that he turns out to be fine, you pay an extra copay and move on. But if he is getting dehydrated or something is wrong, you will feel much better that you trusted your instincts.

He is urinating. Not as much as usual but he isn't drinking as much as usual. He is due for another bottle in an hour. I am going to see what happens with that feeding and decide what I am going to do. Thank you for the replies. I am going nuts here. I am by myself. And I am nervous.

I saw a different dr last night. My reg dr. wasn't there. I like my regular dr...

So I gave DS his bottle at 9pm. He cried for about 30 seconds and then drank 2 ounces. And then he cried a little bit after wards. He fell asleep shortly after being burped. He has been asleep on the couch next to me for almost an hour. Thisd bottle was the first bottle since 1pm this afternoon that he had more then 1 ounce. We are going to make an appt to see the pedi GI. Something is definitely going on with the little guy..Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: HELP---7 week old no appetite for 2 days

After going to the pedi's office today and calling my regular pedi GI and another GI doctor and getting no where, I was finally able to get the doctor at the office to call me back today and listen to me. I told him what had been going on with DS the last couple of days. The crying while eating, not eating more then an ounce or two per feeding, the spitting up, I was able to get a prescription for Zantac. YAY. He got his first dose at 730pm. I hope this helps him. How long does it take to see a difference? He has been miserable as have I. I am working on about an hour of sleep. Hubby working nights this week. I am afraid to find out what is going to happen next...First the formula issues, then the insurance not paying for the formula, and now the bad reflux....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
