help! Adenoid removal and/or ear tubes questions
Just wondering: if your DC had adenoids removed what prompted it? i mean symptoms? and then, how was the recovery from it? how old was your DC when it was done? same questions for ear tubes-what was the reason, recovery, and age? thank you! DS is having both done in january and is 18 months so i'm just wondering about these things. his main symptoms are sleep apnea, persistent, constant, heavy runny nose, all mouth breathing, and constant ear fluid. TIA for ANY info you can offer!!

DS had tubes put in and it was because he has had so many ear infections.
It was a very quick surgery and he recovered just as quickly.

Re: help! Adenoid removal and/or ear tubes questions
i had tubes in my ears & my adenoids out when i was about 7
i had a huge issue with fluid in my ears & the doctors thought i was loosing my hearing in one of my ears, so thats why i got the tubes in
not sure why they took my adenoids out lol
from a kids point of view i remember being totally fine with everything... i was sensitive to the anesthesia, but thats just me b/c i am sensitive to it as an adult too

Re: help! Adenoid removal and/or ear tubes questions
we just went through this with my son - he had the surgery on the 22nd at exactly 15 months
he had his adnoids removed and tubes put in - he had a lot of ear infections, was having night terrors at night, a total mouth breather, always congested
the surgery was not as bad as i thought - we also had the possibily of tonsils removed but they were't a major necessity -we got to the hospital at 9:45 for an 11:30 surgery - they checked us in and checked out my son - before going up for surgery - they gave a drug to make him loopy - then i carried him upstairs and they wheeled the crib up there, Then we waited with him upstairs till they took him in and this part was a little funny because he was so loopy from the medicine -he was laughing in slow motion. WE met the anthetiologist and went over a few things and then we talked to the surgeon. Then they took him into surgery, it lasted about an hour and half.
Then the doc came out and talked to us about the surgery and that it went well and he took us to our son in recovery. I will not lie this was the worst part - he was very out of it when he woke up from anethesia and was hard to calm down and they ended up giving a very small amount of morphine and that calmed him down and he took a couple onces of water - my son was off botttles before the surgery but we brought a bottle because it was easier for him to suck on - he was off the bottle a day after surgery - They put the IV in his foot -he ripped it out a bit when waking up from aneteisa but they easily put back in, also he would not leave the oxuygen monitor on his finger - so they put it on his foot and that worked much better
we got back to the room and he layed on me and we got some apple juice that he drank from the bottle- after that he took a nap in the crib
he woke up fromt he nap much happier he had some more juice and then some jello
we thought he would have to stay over night but he was discharged at 5 pm - it would have been hard to keep the iv in him any longer when he was feeling better
we gave him tylenol when we got hom and he slept fine through night except for soaking thourgh his diaper from drinking so much juice - we gave him tylenol in the middle of the night too
over the next couple days he slept a little more than normal and he can only have soft foods for 2 weeks - ie no crackers or cookies or toast - but he was himself really the next day and i have only given tylenol when needed but really maybe once or twice a day for the first few days
he is breathing much better already -
sorry so long but hope this helps
oh we used Dr. Spencer

Re: help! Adenoid removal and/or ear tubes questions
FM me all you want - i know exactly what you are going through
for me i am not sure the tubes were even necessary for him but i did it with the aednoids to not have to go under anethesia again in a few months but he is so much quieter it is amazing
also just so you know it could save him a lot of pain later - enlargesd adenoids lead to mouth breathing which leads to upper palate being smaller then the bottom jaw - which can require a palate expander or breaking the jaw to get proper alignment
my cousin had hers removed only because of the mouth breathing and night terrors - but she was 8 at the time and since they waited till 8 she has had to have a pallet expander and will need to have her bottom jaw fixed in the next couple of years
