Help! Anyone in advertising?

I'm writing a grant at work that will give us a certain amount for advertising. Since we don't currently have an advertising budget, I'm really clueless about prices, etc.

I got some quotes today and have no idea if it's reasonable or not. Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

What kind of advertising are you looking at? What medium? What would be the duration of the campaign?

Radio, tv which will have to be very small scale, got quotes from News12 and print (Newday). It will be a public awarness campaign and will run anywhere from 6-8 months depending on the funding.

Well-- I have been out of traditional advertising for a while-- I work mostly online now, so I am not sure how much of a judge I can be on the prices, but if you want to FM me I can give you some kind of opinion.. but what I would suggest is getting quotes from comparable venues (i.e. Daily News, local cable channels, etc.) and comparing the prices. You should always look at the price as it relates to how many impressions you are getting, and also how the viewing and reading audience aligns with your target.

Also, most of the time the fees that are on the rate card are escalated prices- and these can be negotiated down-- usually with the more you buy and if you are a large company. If you are a non-profit, you should absolutely make them aware of this because they may make special concessions for you-- even if they cannot negotiate the price down, they may be able to give you added-value-- additional placements and more exposure-- ask about this with whomever you are dealing with.

Lastly- if you are making these calls- I am guessing you have never negotiated ad rates before- another route you may want to take is contacting large media buying houses and see if they have any depts that can help you-- In the way that you may not be able to get a low rate because you are a small organization and will not have a large budget-- the people at these media houses have negotiated rates whether they are representing you, or GE or Target. I can give you the names of some places to call if you are interested.

Re: Help! Anyone in advertising?

bottom line-- you don't want anyone to take advantage of you and you want to stretch your dollar as much as possible.

If you have a web site to link to, I also recommend doing Paid Search through Google Ad Words-- look on google and you can find out info about this. Paid search is by far the most effective advertising vehicle out there-- and you only pay for the clicks on your link and through this google program- you don't need a big agency behind you to realize the efficiencies.
