Help, bad constipation after starting solids- With follow up question in thread
My 6 month DD has been on solids for a few weeks now. She usually goes poop 2-3 times per day, but now she hasn't gone at all in over 2 days. Today she is really straining and turning bright red trying to push and she ends up crying like she is in pain. I can see that she has some poop stuck, it just won't come up. I am going to try to give her some prune or pear juice in a little while, but is there a point when I should be going to the doctor?

Re: Help, bad constipation after starting solids
Try feeding her prunes. Also, rub her belly and gently put her knees to her belly.

Re: Help, bad constipation after starting solids
DS used to have big constipation issues. Our ped said to never let it go past 3 days, so if she doesn't go today I would call tomorrow.
We had to switch from rice cereal to oatmeal, the rice really bound him up. Also, no bananas or applesauce and increase all the "P's" peaches, pears, prunes. You may want to talk to your PED about giving DC water or adding molasses or brown sugar to bottles.

Re: Help, bad constipation after starting solids
I would call your ped and see what they rec for sure. The longer the poop sits there, the harder it will get and the worse it will be to come out. We are sadly constipation experts, when it gets that hard it has to just come out b/c prunes etc wont help with the hard part already.
For us, sadly we have had to manually extract some of that poop using a rubber gloved pinky finger. So please call your ped and see what they want you to do.

Re: Help, bad constipation after starting solids
Yes, there is a point at which she should go to the doctor, but I think it's after several days.
I know my Ped would suggest giving 1 oz of prune juice. (Interestingly enough, the doctors suggest this but the nurses in the same practice say no way ). I've been giving my DS prune juice for his constipation since he was about 3.5 mos old (when he needs it).
Have you tried giving her prunes from the jar? That might be an alternative to the juice, but might not work as quickly.
When in doubt...call your Ped.
Here's some poopy dust!

Edited: Until something passes, should I continue to give solids? I just feel like I am continuing to fill up her belly more and more.

Yes but just things that will make the poop softer. Withholding food isn't the answer. What are you currently giving, solids wise?

well that was part of the problems. she had sweet potatoes, and then had bananas(which I know are constipating) and then we did apples. Didn't realize that apples were constipating also until today.
We just started solids 2 weeks ago, so that's all shes had so far. So I think we will try moving on to pears or peaches or a green vegetable now.

Aww poor baby. Try some prunes. They are sweet. My DS loved them. (and they worked! )

Happened w my DD too. Just make sure you are not overdoing it with bananas and increase the fluid intake -- I give my DD pear and white grape juice mixed with water, and that seems to help. Good luck!
