Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)
Posted by marriedinportjeff
what you bring up are 2 seperate problems... First the house isn't selling, but then there's the much more serious problem that your dad is very depressed, stressed, and could be suicidal.
Even if their house wasn't on the market, he likely could be set-off into a depression by something else.
Never mind the house. Take him to a psychiatrist or hospital ASAP. Even if he fights you.... he's way too unstable.
most depression is due to an individuals biochemistry, it's not something that someone can 'snap out of' on their own. They need medication to restore a normal equilibrium. Take care of the home situation later.
to you and your family....
I have to agree. PLEASE have your dad talk to someone.

It's a beautiful house! I wish we were in the market to buy something. Hopefully lowering the price will do the trick.
Good luck!!

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)
I am sorry that your dad is depressed...and I agree with the other girls that counseling is a good idea. Without prying to much, but if they need to sell to get out of debt and your dad wants to retire where will your parents live after they sell? With no income coming in and debts to get rid of, how is he going to be able to live? Sorry....

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)
I agree, your Dad is dealing with a little more than depression over the house, and he needs to see a therapist or a counselor.
There's no guarantee that they will sell quickly in this market, no matter the price. And this is usually a very slow time of year to sell--we put our co-op on the market around this time last year, and not that many people really looked at it. Two months is not long at all these days to try to sell, and even if they get an offer, it could fall through. Buyers are very fickle now too, and that is a very disappointing experience.
It really sounds as if he needs to address what is underlying this depression. The house is probably just the last straw.
I hope he gets some help and feels better about this soon!

It's a beautiful house and I've actually showed it to my sister who is looking to buy...unfortunately, and I am just being honest here, she doesn't like the location. According to the map it's right next to Sunrise Mall.
I pray that it sells asap!
Ditto this. Unfortunately, when we were looking we did not go to see your parents house because of the location being right near the mall. We eventually did buy in Massapequa Park though. I'm sorry.

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long)
couple things that would keep me from buying it- -mall location -needs siding eventually
at the right price im sure they can sell it though- there is nothing wrong with the house- but people can be picky -
another thing- im personally not a big fan of having the 2 front doors, and seeing that picture may turn me off from going to see the house

They put an offer on a small condo on Cape Cod which is about 1/3 of the price of their house. The profit from the house sale is going to pay for their excess mortgage debt HERE. They both will have substantial pensions to support their expenses once they're in their mortgage-free home up on the Cape.

Re: Help! House not selling- dad's terribly depressed (long) UPDATED
My house was on the market since January and we only signed contracts last Monday (waiting on a mortgage committment from the buyers, so fingers crossed everyone). I know it can be discouraging but this is how the market is right now and (in my own opinion) I fear it's only going to get worse. I agree with everyone else about getting your Dad some additional help right now

Wowzers, I am so surprised. I wish that this house was on the market when we were looking - not that it helps. I think that it will sell. We had our house on the Market in January and had only a few people look. the right people came and we had an offer in March but it takes time. They will sell that house - there is NO WAY that they won't It's georgeous.
