Help me buy a decent TV for $1000-$1200
Like a prior poster, I too am TV illiterate. We have a plasma in the family room that is a few years old, my husband bought it, and so far so good.
Now I want a new tv in the basement. This is an area that my kids mostly use. I'm confused with the whole HD LCD deal and what I really need (they need a decent picture, but they certainly aren't aficionados, kwim ). In terms of size, I think I'd like 42 inches and while I would like thin , it doesn't have to be super thin (its going in a built in unit). Am I being realistic???
ETA, My older daughter will use this tv for game systems, I'm assuming that doesn't make a difference, because she is currently use her systems on a tv that's at least 10 years old.

Check out the Olevia tv. Target sells them. I've been looking into tv's, and this brand seems like a great deal and has gotten good reviews. There's a 42" LCD HD ready for less than $1000.

We went to 6th Avenue electronics and got our 40" Sony Bravia lcd for 1200. Fabulous deal. It was a Memorial Day sale and we got on line bright and early. If we hadn't gotten this one we would have gotten a visio from costco. The write ups are pretty good!

We have an Olevia (for 2 years) and love it. At the time we got it at MicroCenter and was a great deal!

Thanks for all the advice!! At the risk of sounding stupid, I went into Sixth Avenue Electronics last week and the salesman was saying something about extra cables?? or mono something or other?? Any ideas. I'm assuming any tv I buy I can just use. Am I wrong?? I don't remember all this talk when we bought our plasma, but that was a few years ago and my husband took care of it.

Yes, he may have suggested HDMI cables. Monoprice.com has the best prices when it comes to those cables.

But what do these cables do ?? And why can't the tv do it itself???Is it because its a less expensive tv?? Do you need the cables for the tv to work??
Thanks for your help, I feel like a dinosaur and everyone else gets this but me. I'm thinking this should become my husband's job, I don't care how busy he is this week.

Re: Help me buy a decent TV for $1000-$1200
all tvs need cables... HDMI is preferred connection. Most stores will try to sell you a HDMI cable for 100 bucks...where use can use the above website for about 20 bucks... Regular cable wire to a tv via a cablebox will not yeild hd signals very well and to take advatange of HD, you need a box anyway unless you TV has a cardreader (you know that card that sticks out of the cablebox)
Any questions, feel free to ask or FM
