Help me! Potty training hell!!! So. Over. It!!
My son, WHO IS ALMOST 4 FREAKING YEARS OLD, is still not entirely potty trained.
Here's the deal. He actually is fully potty trained but he won't do it.
On weekends, when we are home, I keep him naked and he uses the bathroom, no problem for urine. He refuses to poop on the potty. After 3 days I end up putting him back in a diaper because I am afraid of him getting backed up.
During the week, I have to put him in a pull up because I can't trust him not to pee in his pants. If he is not naked, he just goes as if he is in a diaper.
He's driving me nuts because I know he knows how to do it. Any suggestions?

This may be crazy but I had a friend in the same situations and she did this and it worked
She cut a hole in the diaper. So when he had to poop she put him in the toilet but he still felt like he had the diaper on.
Took a few tries but that’s what got him to go

my daughter was the same way with poop. But she got used to knowing i would eventually do the pull up so i took my chances and took her out places in public with just underwear and risked the accident. Once I started doing that and asking if she had to pee in public, she barely ever had accidents because she knew we weren't home and she wasn't in a diaper.
For pooping, I did the same thing. I kept her in underwear for daycare, no pull ups except for napping. She eventually had to go and couldn't hold it anymore, and didn't give me or daycare a problem after that.

With my ds we used a rewards chart and it helped. We put stickers on the chart and after a certain number of stickers he got a prize. He probably didn't need the chart after the first week, but we did for about 3 weeks

I would probably start with putting him in undies at home and pumping him full of fluids one weekend. Watch him closely, make accidents a pita for him. I make dd undress herself and wait on the potty while I clean up the floor, then clean her up, then make her go get dressed on her own and she generally hates it. Hopefully he'll catch on in a weekend and can ditch the diaper during the week. I think spending the majority of time in a pullup is probably counterproductive. Idk though, I still go through bad phases with my 4.5yo so I may not be the best to give advice. Dealing with the accidents sucks but I think you just have to go for it.

Thanks for the advice. I think you are all right. I just need to rip off the bandaid and go for it. I agree pull ups can be counter productive. He calls them big boy diapers because he knows they will hold excrement.
He actually did good today. He asked to wear his "big boy underwear" and put on his pants and went to the bathroom as needed. No poop though. But he was quite proud. He even told the Chinese delivery guy he was wearing his big boy underwear. LOL

Re: Help me! Potty training hell!!! So. Over. It!!
potty trained my son for 2 and half years. he knew how to do it but he just didn't want to. he turned 5 i November started K in September. 2 weeks before kindergarten he finally went the whole 2 weeks without accidents. but now he is started to regress again and having accidents!!
he can do it but he will not stop what he is doing if he is really into it to pee. he rather just pee his pants. he drives me crazy!!!
i know people say no to do it but the only thing that worked for him was a punishment. now when he does have accidents he loses something.
i never wanted anymore kids but if i was on the fence about having another i would never simply because i refuse to deal with potty training ever again.

I think you need to commit to underwear and not go back. Yes, it may be messy, but he knows you're just going to keep giving him a diaper.

I agree—plus at this age (as long as there aren’t any developmental disabilities involved) I would have him clean up after himself. Take off his clothes, put them in the laundry, wipe up the floor, etc.
He may be more inclined to use the potty if NOT using the potty becomes more work.

my 3rd guy was very late in the potty training dept. He was 4.5 when he finally pooped in the potty but he didn't have accidents. he would ask for a diaper when it was time to poop and we obliged. We said when school was over you had to poop in the potty and after the last day of school he went and took care of business and we haven't looked back

Re: Help me! Potty training hell!!! So. Over. It!!
Your stories are making me feel better.
I sent him to school today with underwear. He did good. Now my aunt has him and is keeping her eye out. I guess what has really prevented me from just taking the chance is that I have different child care every day and I feel bad making them deal with the accidents. But at this point, I'm sure it will be better than wiping his butt!

During the day, they should also just take him potty every 2 hours. That will help prevent accidents.
Good luck!
