HELP! Questions about BF, pumping, and weaning due to increase in solids
I took DS for his 6 mos appt today and my ped said I need to start introducing more food (i.e., yogurt, pastina, eggs, cheese, puffs and cheerios). I have been doing 3 meals a day-cereal & fruit, veggies & fruit, and Chicken/turkey/beef (etc.) and fruit or veggie for a month now. Plus he nurses or is bottle fed (using BM) 4x/day (usually 6, 12, 4, 8). Now that I'm back at work, I pump for his 12 o'clock feeding. If I eliminate the 4 o'clock feeding, do I pump or let my body adjust or do you suggest something else? And do I do this gradually? Would I give him a snack then? Sometimes I pump in the morning too b/c he only takes one side, should I not? I'm definitely pumping more than he takes when I give him the bottle, so I have a good freezer supply. I just don't want to mess up my supply for when I do nurse him (i.e., weekends, school vacations). I'm one of the only of my friends and family to BF, so I'm clueless. Dr. said for his age, he only needs 16 oz of liquid a day, but I don't know how comfortable I am with that. Any advice would be awesome!!! TIA!

IMO, nursing a 6 month old 3x a day seems like it may be too little. You ped recommended that?

At that point I was still nursing on demand, 5-8 times per day. My ped told me to nurse 4-8 times a day even at my 9 month appointment. I would still keep nursing as you are now.

I can't believe that's what your ped recommended. BM or formula should be the MAIN SOURCE of nutrition up until a year old. Food is really for practice only until after a year.
My ped told me when I introduce foods to nurse first, then feed DS an hour later. When I start foods I am not dropping any nursing sessions.
JMHO, but I would look for a new ped (if I were you).

They suggested the opposite-food first, then bottle or BF so he doesn't get too full from the liquid (and it's more like a meal). DS is definitely interested in table food, so I don't have a problem introducing different (or more) food, but I'm undecided what to do with the number of feedings. I think I'll try the food before liquid thing first and see how that plays into his BFing schedule. I saw one of the male doctors today, so I may call to speak to one of the female doctors, who have more hands on experience with BFing. He just went from 5 to 4 feedings b/c he's sleeping through the night...

ITA! This is exactly what DS' ped told us. We just went for his 6 month appt. and she said that he should be drinking between 27 & 30oz. of BM/formula a day on top of 3 meals.

ITA. I'd really question the ped's credentials if he recommended less BFing and more solids. Solids are just for practice. You should be BFing first so DC gets as much BM as possible. I've never heard of limiting a 6 month old to 16 oz of BM (or formula) per day. I think that's ridiculous.
DS started solids at 6 months. I always BFed first and gave solids 30-60 minutes after BFing. DS didn't eat 3 meals per day until 7.5 months. That was around the time he dropped down (on his own) to nursing 4 times per day.

I agree with this as well. When we started solids at 6 months, I asked the ped if I should be nursing less. She said he may start eating a little less at each nursing, but that I should continue to offer it as often as I had been, because breastmilk still should be his main source of nutrition. But if he nurses less, it should be his choice, not mine. He hasn't showed any signs of wanting to nurse less!
