Help! Toddler sleep issue
Katherine used to be a great nighttime sleeper (8pm-8am) and she still is--except now she thinks it's appropriate to get up around 6:30am She wants to watch Wowo Nernie--aka Elmo Ernie--aka Sesame Street. My DH gets up with her, goes downstairs and puts it on. Is this a reward?
This morning, I told him to tell her that Wowo Nernie were still sleeping and not to put it on until at least 7am. I'd like to get her back to 8am--is this possible? Please don't laugh--can you train a toddler to sleep later? I'm hanging on by a thread. Between these two girls, we think they're ganging up to destroy us

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
Ha! I'd like to know too.
My daughter likes to wake in between 5:30-6:30am, though she has NEVER in her life slept until 8am!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think this is just how she is....Guess I gave birth to a morning person.
Could be a phase...Sometimes DD gets up early for a week or so when she's teething, etc... Lately when she's up extra early, I go in her room, tell her Mommy & Daddy are still sleeping, it's very early, I give her a soft book to occupy her & tell her to go back to sleep. She'll usually stay quiet for a little longer.

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa... if I could figure out a way to get Alex to sleep later, I'd write a book! Most days she wakes up around 6:30am. I've tried everything from putting her to bed later, putting her to bed earlier, ignoring her in the AM, and I'm telling you, NOTHING works

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
6:30 am is a very common toddler wake up time. I don't think you'll be able to train her to sleep later.

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
I'm sorry I laughed because I see she is still obsessed with Ernie! Antonio wakes up at 7 even on the weekends. I do find that when we stay out later he will sleep in later but not much.
Maybe now that it's summer let her stay up an extra half hour and see if that works. Otherwise just let her hang out in her crib...is she crying or just calling out "Ernie"?

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
Bella is a BEAR if she wakes up before 7 am...seriously. 15-30 minutes can make or break the day.
I am waking with her 6 out of 7 (if not 7 out of 7) days a week and if she wakes at all before 7, I will go in there gently and say Bella it's not time to be up yet, lay her down, and brush her hair back. She is used to it now and she will go back anywhere from 20 minutes to over an hour.
DH went and picked her up at 6:45 to "help" me because I got in last night (I was two steps behind him too late) and this morning was Whinefest 2007!!!
When she got up on her own at 7:20 yesterday, awesome.
I think that you can gently let her know it's early and everyone is still sleeping hope this helps.

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
Unfortunately I don't think you can traini them to sleep longer. You are better off putting your efforst into teaching her to play in her crib/room on her own until you come and get her. How old is she? Can you set and alarm clock for 7:30 and tell her when it goes off that is when you come and get her??

Re: Help! Toddler sleep issue
Roman has cut back on his sleep too. He used to go until 7 7:30 maybe but lately it's been 5:30 6:00. I've just learned to adjust to his schedule.
