Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
DS was tongue tied. The Dr. clipped when he was a little less than a week old. It was no big deal. It bled a little and that was about it. The dr. suggested we do it sooner than later and I'm glad we did and its over. My step mother babysits a boy who did not get it corrected until he was 7. He developed a speech issue.

It's something babies are born with.
I think the doctor is an idiot for telling you to wait to see if the child has speech problems. DS had his frenulem snipped when he was 2.5. He did (and still does) have speech problems. Perhaps if our ped. would've noticed the issue when he was an infant, it would've prevented the speech issue. Maybe it wouldn't have though, but I would seek a second opinion.

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
Someone I knew just had their babies tongue clipped also for being tongue tied...so they definately still do it...I think it can also create an issue with eating....I dont see why they would wait to see if a baby has a speech problem.....

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
Sorry to crash the parenting board, but my DH is tongue tied. It was never clipped, and he doesn't have speech or eating problems (and didn't as a child). The only time you'd even notice is if you tell him to stick out his tongue as far as it can go, and it barely comes out at all That aside, everything works normally and he turned out fine.

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
i'm a speech therapist... i would say the sooner you get it done, the better. its such a minor procedure that will probably save him some difficulties down the line. even though its not a HUGE issue now, it could become one... especially as he starts to use it more to make new sounds and new words, etc. DH was tongue tied also, and didn't have his frenulum snipped until he was about 2 or 3 years old. because of this, he had speech all through grade school ( like 5 or 6 years) in school AND privately after school. you'd never know it to hear him talk now- hes perfectly fine. but i think getting it snipped as a baby would have saved him from sooo much therapy. good luck! let me know if you have any questions about it!

yeah... i would.. like i said, its such a minor thing, but its better safe than sorry. its not like hes doomed to have bad speech forever... but its just best for the kids to have full range of motion of their tongue when they start to learn to talk. your insurance might even pay for a speech therapist eval, just to get an opinion from that angle. good luck!!

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
I was told the same exact thing when dd was born- to wait until she's in school and see if any problems related to it. From the second my ped. told me that, I knew I was not going to wait that long, I think it's ridiculous to wait that long. However, now that dd is almost 8 months, the tongue has stretched- it was connected more towards the tip of the tongue and she couldn't stick her tongue out. Now I hardly notice it, so she may not need to have anything done. I think it couldn't hurt to wait a little to have it clipped, but I wouldn't wait too long.

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
jonah is a little tongue-tied as well, but we were told to wait and see if his tongue stretched out before doing anything about it. he is 3 months now and it's already stretched a little bit. sometimes tongue-tied babies have trouble breastfeeding, but it hasn't been a problem for us. we'll see if it affects his speech...

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
Jack was tongue tied. He couldn't stick his tongue out of his mouth. We got it taken care of at two months - I didn't want to wait and see if there were any problems - and neither did my ped.
I know Ibelle on here's son is getting his taken care of now - and he's six months. He needs some sort of anesthsesia (sp) for this to get done now. This was also why we opted to get it done early.
I would talk to an ENT specialist now - do not wait a few months - and see what they recommend you to do. IMO - the earlier the better if you do have to have the procedure.

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
I don't know much about this, but I would visit another doctor, get another opinion. It can't hurt. It doesn't seem to make sense to wait until he has speech problems, though I don't know how involved this procedure is, so maybe there is some reason.
Get another opinion, preferably from a doctor outside your doctor's practice if he is part of a group.
Good luck!

Re: Help...did anyones child have this????
My son was tongue tied and we had his frenulum snipped by a doctor in Mineola when he was 4 months. He was unable to latch on from birth (oh the therapy I am going to need about this one) and it turned out that he was unable to latch on because of his tongue. My dad has the same kind of tongue tie that my son had...
The procedure was worse for me then it was for the baby...but he was back to his normal self within hours. Its worth getting done sooner rather than later.
My moms friend is from Zimbabwe and she says that midwives there all keep a pinky nail sharpened so that when babies are born tongue tied they can zip, cut through the frenulum at birth. (might be an old wives tale, but interesting nonetheless)
