help..dog ear problems....UPDATE
I noticed that Bella's ear was starting to smell funny so I decided to clean it with a tissue, and I came out completely brown!!! And the other ear was perfectly clean. I have also noticed that she has been shaking her head alot and scratching. The vet is closed now, but is there anything I can do for until I get an appointment?
Bella went to the vet and she has a yeast infection in her ear!! She has to take steriod pills to dry her out and then get drops 2 times a day.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
Take a little rubbing alcohol and put it on a cotton ball - then clean her ears with that...don't use peroxide (the bubbles will make her crazy) and don't use q-tips. You may have to use more than one cotton ball, but this seems to be the most effective way to clean their ears.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
Riley has the same thing...she produces a ton of wax, I clean her ears every other night...its gross and kinda stinky. Just use a cotton ball with some rubbing alcohol.
eta: they also make cleaners that you can put into their ears to help wash the wax out. check out Dr. Foster and Smiths website.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
Its very possible that he has ear mites. When Luca had it, I cleaned his ear w/ alcohol on a cotton ball. But he may need drops

Re: help..dog ear problems....
I think it has to be something other then a dirty ear, because the other ear when I clean it, the tissue/cotton ball comes out clean. I must have tried to clean her ear 5 times tonight, and the tissue keeps coming out just as dirty. I will call the vet tomorrow.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
It may be an ear infection. My labs ears STINK when they are infected (can smell it without even going near his ear) and the wax build up is very heavy and comes back soon. I would go to the vet.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
I agree with the above posters. It could be an ear infection. Charlie gets them occassionally, because Shar-pei are prone to them...
To be preventative, we have a wash that we got from our vet. We put it in his ears, swish it around a little and then get out all the wax with a cotton ball. I've found that the round cotton pads for facial cleansing work well too. Q-tips tend to push some of the wax further down even though it seems you get a lot more out with them.
Good luck!

Re: help..dog ear problems....
If it is smelly and brown it sounds like ear mites. I would go to the vet and check it out and get drops for your dogs ears.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
My dog has big floppy ears and needs to have his ears cleaned often. Our vet gave us a solution to use and his ears are fine now.

Re: help..dog ear problems....
My puggle has floppy ears and gets ear infections often.. I use ear wash from the vet, they sell also at pet stores.. I was out his ears and then dry..
when you go to the vet they will give you meds for ears, after my pups ear cleared up i kept left over in fridge and when he gets it again i take out, let it get room temp and then use ..
