Has this happened? We just got a csll that my 8 year old music teacher died. Very suddenly. We have no info about how he died. We told dd's she kind of shut us out. The voicemail.from the.school said grief counselors will be in hand on Tuesday. What can we do??

She had him for music classes a few times a week.

They had the show... It seemed to go ok. The principal made a nice speech about the music teacher. My child didn't sing a lick, but that's neither here nor there. But they changed the program and didn't have any kind of dedication to him. Which was weird to me but I'm not really going to read more into it. All in all a nice show

If it were my child, I would explain what happened, stress that it was an accident, and ask if they have any questions. I would also tell them that if they have any questions later they can ask anytime, because sometimes it takes awhile for children to process these things. There are a lot of children's books out there as well that can help.

I live in the same town as you and heard about this today (my son will eventually attend the same school). My condolences, it sounds like she was a wonderful person from what I've been reading on the Facebook groups.

Oh no. How sad. Agree with everything pp said. I would also validate her feelings. Tell her it's ok if she wants to cry, is sad, or mad, or scared. And all those feelings are ok and she should tell mommy how she is feeling.

I would just tell your daughter what happened and let her know that you are there for her if she wants to talk about it even if it's weeks from now. That is ok to be sad and to ask questions. I would also let her know though that the entire school may be sad and talking about it because everyone will be grieving and she shouldn't be surprised if some of the kids or even teachers are sad/crying at school.

That is just terrible for all involved : (.

Thanks all. It was just so sudden and we have no explanation. Which is fine but it would be nice to have some reason. The band will march in his honor in the Memorial Day parade. We got a voicemail that said that if your child feels that they cannot participate that that child's wishes would be respected. Which I thought was incredibly thoughtful. My child is not in band but knows a lot of band people. It's a tough situation and I feel like it will hit her on TuesdayChat Icon

I highly doubt you will get an explanation of the teacher's death, at least not from the school. It's against the law I believe, for them to disclose the manner of death of an employee. We lost a librarian and were not given details. We lost another librarian, and knew that she was sick because her family and friends updated the community via FB.

Sad situation, I would definitely have her visit the grief counselor.

Very sad as I'm from the same town & knew the teacher as my mom taught with him for many years. It will never be disclosed to the parents the cause of death, rumors will fly. Those that knew him, know cause of death

In terms of your daughter, you have to set it in simple terms before she goes to school tomorrow. The grief counselors will help them understand but I do believe even the staff will have a hard time bc it was sudden & a shock. Doesn't help he was young.

It's so crazy. He was so young. I know that we won't know the cause, but we can't help but speculate. I told her it's ok to be sad, she said she's not. I don't think she was as close to him as other students were, but I know it will affect her. Its tough it's going to be a long week

Thanks again all

Very true! Like I said, you'll hear so much & just hopefully it doesn't get to the kids bc then questions will arise. In the meantime, going back to school tomorrow will be tough on all but they will all have each other for comfort! He was such a kind & loving man

Agreed. Hopefully they go on with the chorus show in his honor. These kids worked hard and I think they want to do it for him.
