Re: Here's a phrase that I've heard multiple times today, that has me scratching my head
I am proud to be a mother. I am always proud of my sons. They are wonderful boys and I support and love them all the time. But sometimes they do something so extraordinary and so wonderful - that just makes me focus on how lucky I am to have them.
My son told me that he would like to give half of his Christmas presents to one of his friends who told him he didn't get anything from Santa. It reminded me of what a compassionate and sweet child I have and I was overwhelmed with pride. It doesn't mean I wasn't proud before... it just magnified it.
Same with how I feel today. I am always proud to be an American. I would have woken up proud to live in a country where we are able to choose our leaders regardless of WHO won. But that pride is magnified today.

Has it really? In my neighborhood, people were celebrating my lighting garbage cans on fire. FDNY was called to this group of buildings from 9:30 until almost 1:00 in the morning....Today at school students are screaming in the hallway and telling teachers, it is now their turn and we cannot tell them what to do any more.
Is that where we are now?

Re: Here's a phrase that I've heard multiple times today, that has me scratching my head
I don't know if its so much a "proud/not proud" argument, really... the implied message is one of awareness IMHO. Like I'm grateful for a zillion things all the time, but on say, Thanksgiving Day, I'm more AWARE (and vocal) about how blessed/lucky/grateful I am, KWIM?
I'm a proud American every day, its just how I was raised (those immigrant parents of mine did a good job on that!) but certainly there have been days where that pride just swells in your chest and is hard to contain... yesterday was one of those, at least for me!

i guess my question then is, would the same tune be sung if we had elected the first woman as VP?
Or would the message have been, "the country is doomed, she's an idiot."

Well let's just say I would've been posting this reply from Canada... j/k, j/k, j/k I think MILLIONS of people would've been proud that we finally have a female VP, qualified or not... But absolutely there would also be the Chicken Little Contingent ("The sky is falling!)

As someone who is NOT a fan of Palin--I would have had mixed feelings...while it would have been historic that a woman was V.P. - I would have my reservations about it since I feel she is a poor example for the first female v.p. BUT at the same time I still wouldn't feel as excited simply because being the first female Veep is still not being the first female PRESIDENT. If there would have been a female for President, whether I liked them or not, I would definitely feel proud of that.

Don, I've been thinking about this post for hours. It saddens me to say, but I haven't been proud to be an American for a long time. Today is NOT different from yesterday on the pride front, but today I have hope that my pride will be restored. If McCain had won, I would also have had hope that my pride would be restored.
Both candidates offered this country so many things. Not the same things, but still they both had things to offer. Only history will tell this country if the right choice was made yesterday.

Yes, really, it has!!!!!!!!! This country has really come along way from what the past was like.
Oh, BTW, these incidents that you stated that happened in your neighborhood is just pathetic and does not represent that historic moment that took place last night.
If you cannot see past these minor incidents and see the progress that's been made in this country then I don't know what to say.

I'm pretty sure it cant be argued that going from separate but equal to president of the US in 60ish yrs isn't a long way... As for your students, that is just sad, but they are children (im guessing teenagers), hardly representative of rational thought.

Re: Here's a phrase that I've heard multiple times today, that has me scratching my head
I have always been proud to be an american what happened yesterday doesnt change things at all.
my biggest question is this- everyone keeps saying this is historic that an african american man has become president- but he is only half, his father is from Kenya and his mother from Kansas so lets say if the president elect was 1/2 hispanic and 1/2 white they are only going by their hispanic heritage? Obama was raised with his mothers side of the family. so I am really confused as to why he is being pointed out as only african american. I am not trying to start any drama either, I am honestly asking.

Re: Here's a phrase that I've heard multiple times today, that has me scratching my head
I've always admired the ideals that led to the founding of this country, and proud of that. But I lost of lot of faith in this country and my fellow Americans after Bush was re-elected in 2004. And many of the actions of his administration as well as his performance made me less proud.
Being proud of your country should not be a given, IMO. We have a pretty checkered history and there are many things that we've done that are not worthy of pride.
However, I was proud of my country yesterday for recognizing Barack Obama's intelligence and leadership.

But what is it that you're proud of? There are a few of us that have said we're proud of the IDEALS of America, but not necessarily the actions.
So, say - just for example - you're a die-hard supporter of a woman's right to choose and an administration passes a law that bans abortion without exception throughout the 50 states - are you proud?

I'm just curious--do you think those of us who say there have been times when they are NOT proud of this country...that we are less patriotic or "Un-American" compared to those who say they have always been proud no matter what? (Not picking a fight I swear--just asking!)

I don't think "pride" = agreeing with everything?
I'm proud to be a member of my family. I have pride in my parents and my siblings. That doesn't mean I have to agree with everything they do.
I am proud to be an American. I am proud to be a part of a free country, with freedom of speech, free elections, and so many opportunties. That doesn't mean I have "blind pride" or "blind faith" in American and every direction the country has taken. No one could possibly ever agree with everything that has happened in this country. However, I am proud to be associated with a county where different ideas are free to be expressed, where progress happens, even if it does so slowly.

oh no offense taken at all It's actually a very good question.
I guess what I'm struggling with is that I feel there is a bit of a disconnect and I'm not sure I can explain this right.
Naturally, we're not always proud of the actions of this country. Some of the decisions made yesterday are proof of that. That doesn't make us less American, it makes us human.
But, the way I've heard some people describe their pride yesterday (and it was no one here) - it was almost like they weren't proud to be an American until the candidate they voted for got in.
And that's where I have an issue.
I just think there's a disconnect between not always being proud of where our country goes direction-wise, and the overall pride of being American.
The simplest analogy I can think of is that there are times Boosh and I want to kill each other but we never put into question how deep the marriage is.

@ the idea of wanting to kill your spouse---somehow mine is still alive by some miracle.
I do understand your point about there being a disconnect. I suppose I would fall into the category that I'm always happy to just be an American...but have had times where I'm NOT proud of things our country & govt. might have done thru the years. My father came here from another country, and always told us how lucky my siblings are to be born here. Yesterday I definitely felt MORE pride than before seeing Obama get elected.

No. I honestly just think we're using the word "pride" in a slightly different way.

I do agree with you, but I also think that there are times when the country's actions and/or the direction it's headed go against those very freedoms. I think Proposition 8 is a case in point. I'm really not proud of that.
Also, I think there are degrees of pride -like there is with trust - some people may be more willing to have or show pride than others, if that makes sense.

I'm not proud of that particular decision either. You can be proud to be an American and NOT proud of certain things the country has done. I, personally, believe the two are not mutually exclusive. This is my pesonal opinion and interpretation.

I'm proud to be an American always but with Obama now being President I feel inspired. His speech was unbelievable Tuesday night. It makes me feel even more proud and actually puts a smile on my face. I drove to work the next morning and felt like I did when Americans came together after 9-11. Extremely proud to be an American and looking forward to the change.
