Hi there! Intro post and newbie question
HI ladies. I apologize in advance if I sound dumb or stupid but this is my first cycle with an RE I would like to ask your opinion please. I am 39, will be 40 in January. I have one child already (5 years old, unplanned). TTC child #2 at 38 years old (Sept 2012), got pregnant the first month, miscarried at 7 weeks. No AF for 3 months after, been TTC for 8 months after that, nothing. Crazy irregular cycles, had a uterine polyp removed (D&C) this past August and just decided to see an RE. Been told I have PCOS (taking metformin now), all other hormone levels good, HSG done (tubes and uterus good), DH did SA - volume, count, motility good. Only bad thing (but not bad according to RE) is morphology - only 1% normal where they want to see 4% but again, they are not concerned. I am ready to begin a cycle with clomid (preapproved, Freedom sent me all the meds, gonal F, ovidrel, prometrium). Question is - should I try 1-2 cycles of timed intercourse instead of going right to an IUI? Insurance will pay for 6 IUI's. The RE said my chances do not increase significantly by going right to an IUI. That timed intercourse while taking clomid and metformin is just as good in my situation. Is that true? WWYD?

Re: Hi there! Intro post and newbie question
This is coming from someone who is also 39: time is not on our side. I would not waste time. My AMH has dropped dramatically in one year. At our age, ever month counts. You have coverage for the IUIs; do an IUI.

I agree with everyone else - why wait? You are covered for 6 IUIs, I would use them!

Hi there! Intro post and newbie question
Def do the iui. Why did you get Gonal though if you are using clomid? 1% morphology should def weigh info your iui decision. They wash the sperm so all the best shaped ones will be what's used.

Hi there! Intro post and newbie question
IUI would only increase your chances a few % at most. i say do what you are comfortable with. while it is true that time isnt on your side - IUI wont substantially increase your chances, IVF probaly would but that's a different beast. you will learn a lot about your body's response to meds so i really dont think IUI is a necessity. i think it also depends how desperate you are to be pregnant THIS cycle. if you are willing to learn more about your response to meds, and perhaps give it a go yourself, one or two TI cycles prob wont make it or break it. do what YOU are comfortable with. it sounds like your RE will support either option. i didnt have the same issues as you, but i did 6 medicated cycles and never one IUI. i went to IVF after that. i wanted to make a baby MY way, even if meant a few % lower chance. we did get pregnant a few times that way, but always ended in MC which is what ultimately lead us to IVF. if the chances were that much better with an IUI it would be a no brainer, but frankly in your case they aren't and in many cases it doesn't increase the chances THAT substantially. either way its your choice. good luck!

Re: Hi there! Intro post and newbie question
I agree do what's best for you. 39 here as well, time is not my friend at this point. I had my first RE app. yesterday and moving forward as soon as we get the results to all the test done.
I found out that my ins. covers up to the first 3 cycles ot iui and ivf so we've decided to take advantage of it.

Thank you I think I am going to do 1-2 cycles medicated, no IUI. This first one I am basically going to write0it off, as you said, as a learning experience. See how my body deals/reacts with the meds, adjust doses if necessary, etc. Since there isn't a substantial increase, I think we will just go medicated for the first 2.

Wishing you the best of luck!!! Making that first appointment with an RE took a long time for me. I wish I would have gone sooner.
