High schoolers - amount of study time

If you have kids in HS, how much time do they spend on homework and studying? My SS is in 10th grade and has very high apsirations for his future, (medical school) but I think he is sabotaging himself by not putting in enough effort. He has mid-terms this week. His English mid-term was today. He did not study at all over the weekend, saying they did review in class and he's "got it all down." He has math tomorrow and even though he got home from school (just his test) at 10:30 this morning, did not open a book until 3:30 and has to go out tonight from 6:00 - 9:00. I feel like I was studying ALL the time, epsecially when it came to mid-terms and finals. (But I felt a lot of internal pressure to do really well in school). He spends at most an hour per night on homework. My SS is a smart kid, and does OK, but not good enough for what he ultimately wants (averages in the mid-80s for his cores subjects). I have tried talking to him about it, but he is young and doesn't get it. Am I off base in thinking he should be doing more? I don't want to crush his dreams, but I have told him that it's very important to develop study skills now that he will have to have if he goes to med school - and try to explain how competitive it is - but he thinks I'm exaggerating. I guess I'm just frustrated because I know if he put in more effort, he would be at the top of his class. And I get this is "just" HS, but I also feel like the habits he has now will carry him through college and whatever else he goes onto later in life. (neither DH or SS's mother went to college, so they are not ones to really talk to him about this kind of thing).

Re: High schoolers - amount of study time

My dd is in 10th grade also and did no studying for these tests. She doesn't spend that much time on homework either, probably about an hour or less some days.
I think this is a good time to start good habits but I also think kids should not be pushed too much as they WILL rebel later and I personally wouldn't want my child doing that in college where money is involved and they possibly getting kicked out of school.
I feel bad for kids whose parents pressure them to get all A's, even if they can.
A little push is always good but I think we still need them to be able to be kids. They will have a lifetime of being an adult. Make sure they are serious about school but then let them be a teen and have fun. Chat Icon

I don't want to pressure him too much, but he keeps talking about wanting to go to med school (and I know that can change a zillion times between now and then, but he has talked about it a lot for quite a while). I'm torn between wanting to push him a bit more to have the possibility of achieving his goals and just letting things happen. I know next year will start the college process and he talks about looking at schools with pre-med programs. I guess I'm a little worried about him focusing on something that, unless things change, it is not likely he can achieve.

I totally get you. For pre-med, I would think there would be a lot more studying also.
Maybe take it slow and see what he decides next year and then tell him that he really will have to buckle down then if he wants to get into that.
Good Luck. My dd is wishy-washy with what she wants to do and they just keep sending all these college things to her. It is stressful to me thinking about it. lol.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. We have been telling him that if he wants to acheive his goals he needs to buckle down, but I undertsand that when you are that age, a year or 2 from now seems like an eternity and that its hard to see how what you do today will effect your future. I guess I just feel kind of stuck because he loves to go online and look at colleges and wants to share that with me (which is great), and I don't want to always be pushing the studying thing, but when he says, "oh Brown University looks amazing" I'm not sure if I should try to be more realistic so that he is not let down later or support his (pretty unrealistic) dreams in the moment. He's a really good kid and I just want what's best for him and for him to succeed.

High schoolers - amount of study time

I think each kid is different. I never studied. Some subjects were just easy for me.

I had the same experience in Law School. Some students never studied others spent every waking moment in the library.

If his grades are good then I wouldn't push more studying.

His grades are "OK" - definitely not great (usually low-mid 80's for the core subject - math, science, English, Soc Studies). His overall average is higher because of his grades in band, gym etc. I know that some kids don't need to study, but I don't think he is one of them. I just want to try to instill good habits now, without being a nag about it, so that when he goes to college, he will be well prepared to succeed when no one is there to check up on him.

Re: High schoolers - amount of study time

Can you get some statistics from the schools he's interested in? Like necessary GPA, community service hours required, minimum test scores, etc... So that he can see in back and white what is required of him.
And for the record, my niece is the same age and spends very little time on homework and studying. But school comes very easy to her. She's in mostly honors/AP classes and still manages almost entirely As. But we keep trying to stress to her that grades are not enough. We keep encouraging her to try to join some clubs at school so she has something else to put on her applications.

High schoolers - amount of study time

My daughter is in 8th grade and entering high school in September. She studies and does homework for at least two hours a night, and on a really crazy night has done homework for 5 hours. But, she is very, very much a perfectionist. She know where she wants to go to college already, and is in the national honor society. Sometimes I think she is too hard on herself because kids in the same classes I'm told are only doing homework for an hour or so.

Mid 80's is not going to cut it for med school, does he know the kind of grades you need for college ; pre med and med school? Maybe show him stats on that, that may give him the little push he needs

Crashing, but as a teacher I agree. Colleges will look at his grades from all of high school, and especially for a school like Brown, those grades are simply not high enough. Even low 90s probably aren't enough for Brown.

I know that and I have told him that many times. I don't want to be the one who's always shooting down his dreams, but I don't want him to look back at this time and wish he had done more. I tr to be supportive and push him a bit too, but I get the look like "Ok, I heard you and I've studied as much as I can. . ." I guess I'll see what kind of grades he gets on this round of mid-terms and take it from there.

Thanks everyone!
