New study published on the negative effects of high fructose corn syrup
Link to the release.
A Princeton University research team has demonstrated that all sweeteners are not equal when it comes to weight gain: Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same.
In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides. The researchers say the work sheds light on the factors contributing to obesity trends in the United States.

avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid.
it boggles my arfing mind..these new commercials "everything in moderation"
so while you moderate your soda intake, the **** is in BREAD, PICKLES, and other places you wouldn't even think to find it.
corn farmers may have more pull than the mafia.

I just dont' get why this stuff is not banned.
We can sweeten things just as well with sugar.
Let me guess- HFCS is cheaper right??

it varies by brand...for instance ARnold Breads do not contain HFCS but some others do.
Bubby's pickles dont' contain it, but Claussens do.
and we order our Coca Cola from a mexican store that specializes in imports. Mexican Coke is sweetened with sugar, not HFCS.
Ocean Spray juices do not contain HFCS but others do.
next time you go to the supermarket, READ every single ingredients list. you may be surprised.

There doesn't seem to be a comprehensive list out there of things that contain it vs things that don't, unfortunately.

Also, wanted to post a link to the documentary King Corn. Very interesting piece on how corn and corn products are used in so many facets of the food chain, including the production of HFCS. Well worth watching, imo.

It's crazy! HFCS is in ketchup, cookie mix, bread...I agree, it should be banned. The effects of it are terrible.
I purposely have chosen to be more aware of the food I eat and whether or not it contains HFCS. It's hard, and there's still products I buy that contain it, but I definitely try to limit it at all costs.
Unfortunately, the packaged/processed food contains the most HFCS, and those items are cheaper in price...people who can't afford to eat quality/fresh food get stuck eating the garbage and end up with a myriad of health problems.

I agree. it's probably our BIGGEST health care problem...and sadly will be the hardest to address.
the companies donate MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars to political campaigns.
it's one of the things I am so excited for Michelle Obama about. her efforts to get kids into gardening and learning where the food comes from.
starting early I think it our only hope.
hopefully everyone will have a topsy turvy hanging off their apt balcony/windowsill in a few years

salt is BENEFICIAL in the appropriate amounts.
HFCS has ZERO benefits. it blows my mind that salt is made out to be the bad guy.

I absolutely agree. As a nutritionist, I see all kinds of stuff that could have been prevented. In a perfect world, HFCS wouldn't even exist, but no one's doing us any favors by putting it in everything. I fear mostly for my future children's health because of whats out there...my niece, my nephews, they are the ones growing up on this stuff. I as well that we can become more educated as a society.

I was SHOCKED to find that my regular old grape jelly had it.
I immediately bought organic!

Yes, and when you don't have adequate housing to cook, working long hours, dont have time to shop/cook and other life stressors this is what people end up eating, the convenient, packaged processed stuff.

I used to mock the idea of organic cookies, but since my little guy started eating them and I started reading labels, we buy more of these because many brands do not have HFCS. I really try to avoid it in most foods we buy, but it's hard to avoid 100% at times--it is in so many things!

True, and thats why I think a lot of Americans play the victim and make excuses for the poor lifestyle. There truly ARE people who simply cannot afford to eat healthy, and due to all the circumstances you mention, but there's also a very large section that don't care about their wellbeing and make excuses as to why the CAN'T, when they are simply just not trying to change and would rather make excuses.

I have said this before but I think that instead of politicians spending their efforts banning salt, trans fats etc. They should instead look at making healthy, good for you food more affordable and thus attainable.
I think most people buy the other stuff because it is cheaper. Making it more expensive without providing a less expensive healthy option fixes nothing.

THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Those commercials drive me bananas- especially when they say Corn Syrup- its all natural and made from corn
