Hip Pain after pregnancy? *Updated with Dr's response*
I am almost 6 weeks pp and I've been having hip pain which is getting increasingly worse. If I sit cross-legged (which I usually do while BFing) or if I lay on my side, I can barely get up or walk afterwards. It is starting to worry me. I have my 6 week checkup on Wednesday so I'll talk to the dr about it then, but I was wondering if anyone else experienced this? TIA!!
UPDATE: My doctor wasn't sure what was up because it went away and came back. She told me to watch it and if it doesn't get better soon to go see my PCP and have them do an exam and they will probably send me to an orthopedist or PT. Gee, thanks for the help Although I have to say it was definitely better today. DH thinks it is because I've been moving more lately and my body was just getting used to how it is now.

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
I normally have horrible joints, but my PP hip pain was crazy bad.. I attributed it to my body reshifting everything around and all of the extra weight, and BFing body contortions I still have it sometimes at almost 8m PP... would be curious to see what your Dr. says.

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
I have horrible hip and back pain...sometimes when I get up I feel like I can barely walk. I just figured its because I need to lose weight and the pressure of being pregnant took a toll. Please let us know what Dr says I'm interested too.

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
my hip has been hurting too. I was thinking that maybe because we are bfing we still have hormones in our body that are making our ligaments lax. I would be curious to see what your dr says. good luck

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
My daughter is having the same problem. Not only hips but her legs, knees, etc. She is 6 mos pp and just went to the dr. yesterday again. He suggested physical therapy. He said it's all from pregnancy and can take up to a year to get back to normal.

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
Glad to see I'm not alone, although I'm sorry you ladies are having pain too! I'll definitely let you know what my Dr says tomorrow.
Joan713 - uh oh, 1 year? And I hope your daughter starts to feel better soon. It is bad enough with just the hip pain, I can't imagine it being all over!!

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
I had terrible hip pain after having DD (had no pain there before). It hurt so bad to walk, I could hardly walk any distance and even sitting/lying down was uncomfortable.
My doc referred me to a physical therapist who told me that my Sacroiliac (SI) joint had been displaced, she was certain it happened during labor. She gave me some simple exercises to do to put things right again and I wore a belt-like brace for a while too. It is much better now, 17 months later, although occasionally I still get the odd shooting pain in my hip.
The bad news is, if this is what you have, it will happen again with every subsequent pregnancy/birth, so it's something that should be dealt with to prevent more seriously damage to the joint.
Hopefully this isn't what's going on with you, but incase it is I hope this helped!
Here's a wikipedia article with more info on the SI joint.wikipedia article

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy?
I have also been having bad hip pain since giving birth 14 months ago...been going to physical therapy for 7 months and nothing is helping. Dr said i have "trochenteric tendonitis", said it's very common from pregnancy and I have to get a cortisone shot. Getting it tomorrow and i can't wait!! I can't even lay on that side to sleep b/c it hurts too much

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy? *Updated with Dr's response*
OBs are idiots when it comes to this kind of pain. I went though so much drama with hip pain during pregnancy, I learned a ton. I fired 3 OBs. I finally found one who told me I just needed Yoga and classical music in my life. And while her advice was silly, it led me to a physical trainer who is also a yoga instructor and who works at a clinic specializing in child-bearing related pain.
Not sure if this is what you have, but if your Dr. says physical therapy might be the solution, can I recommend a place. After seeing so many doctors that had no clue what was wrong with me, I would travel to the ends of the earth to find help.
My insurance didn't cover it, but I had one treatment and I was pretty much cured. She told me what exercises to do and how to take care of it. Done and done with it.

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy? *Updated with Dr's response*
I had this problem as well. I could barely walk up and down stairs and standing up was awful. I went to a chiropractor on and off for about 3 months. He said that my pelvic muscles had relaxed and caused my pelvis to shift so that one leg was slightly longer than the other. I had to wait until the muscles tightened back up for it to finally go away- around 1 year. I got several massages as well in which the therapist would try to realign my pelvis. I now do Pilates once a week which helps strengthen and stretch the muscles in that area. If I don't go my back and hips hurt.

Re: Hip Pain after pregnancy? *Updated with Dr's response*
I had this too - I turned out to have a herniated disc, which is pretty common from giving birth.
Mine was so bad it required surgery, but a lot of time they can be helped with chirpractors.
Just make sure you keep an eye on it.
My OB kept writing me off and I kept on top of it.
It took them three months to diagnose me!!

A Chiropractor can most likely help. If they can't atleast they will point you in the right direction. Feel free to FM me if you have a question. I practice on Main St in Islip. Feel better!!
