see it amazes me that the folks that would have no problem with them are the ones who don't live in the prospective area. Of course those of us that will be directly effected by this (those living in the area like me, Lisa, Maathy, etc) are the most upset. I would really find it hard to believe that living within .5 miles of a shelter is a benefit. I know myself when we were looking I went on the HUD websites because me and DH didn't want to live next to the projects or government housing. It just something I don't want in my area.
It's true that I don't own property n the area but I'm not exactly an out of towner either. I spend countless hours a week there and the majority of my clients live in Ronkonkoma or Holbrook. I am concerned for anything that concerns them because I get to know my clients very well and I know where my bread is buttered.
When there was low income housing proposed in my parents neighborhood, I felt the same way. I didn't want to hear people's imaginations running wild but I did want to know the facts about how it would affect us. I just take a more middle of the road approach to looking at these things. I feel that it is not enough to say, "put it anywhere but here." I'd like to see the alternatives because shelters do have to be somewhere. I don't know if someone arriving in Ronkonkoma should see a shelter first thing, though.

Actually, I don't even know where there are shelters on LI, so I did a search. Here are just a few of the towns where shelters exist:
PJ Station Moriches Dix Hills East Northport Deer Park
The fact I did not even know these places exist must mean they operate pretty quietly. I live in and grew up in thet E. Northport area. Property values are high, and what about dix hills?
Another question: What if you were told that the shelter was for women only... would that make a difference?

Re: Holbrook and Ronkonkoma residents
and those shelters all house over 400 people???? 400 people is a lot in one building, no matter how you look at it.
Women or Men, it wouldn't matter. I do know there are female criminals/sexual offenders/etc. They aren't all male. Now, nowhere does it states its a family only shelter. That is different. A family only shelter is for obviously families, but from the research I've seen, that won't be the case.
Now the attachment you gave earlier wasn't even for shelters in the NY area. I've been searching/googling myself. Some of the folks in Long Island shelters are originally from NYC shelters. So I would compare them to NYC shelters. The best part is that some shelters are only open at night, so where are all the residences during the day? Wondering the streets or the LIRR parking lot? Plus, the one in dix hills is actually not in a residenal area. I do know where it is. It is technically Dix Hills, but its almost right on the LIE.

Re: Holbrook and Ronkonkoma residents
I give up.. this is definitely an argument with two very legitimate sides... we all believe what we believe and nothing can change that.
its a good thing this wasn't posted on NFR, can you imagine the drama?

Re: Holbrook and Ronkonkoma residents
I'm a Ronkonkoma resident and wouldn't be happy about it. Seems odd that it wouldn't affect property values for the immediate surrounding areas since no one on here who lives near there would want to be close to it.

can I ask why it is assumed that a homeless shelter would be a safe haven for criminals?
a homeless shelter wouldn't want criminals on its premises. It is a place for those who have no place to go on a cold winter's night... or a place to get a meal when there is no money to feed your children.
Anyone, regardless of who they are or the circumstances surrounding them, have a legal right to be housed. If a person requests housing, the county is obligated by law to provide it. Right now, they are placing people in homes that will accept them. When they run out of these, they must provide something for them. The shelter doesn't have a choice who it accepts if it accepts state, federal or county funding to operate. If these shelters were built just for people who are down on their luck and need a helping hand, I would be all for it. Unfortunately, that is not the case and once a criminal element is allowed in, the community as a whole suffers.

this is exactly the case. County funds support the homes, so that means shelter agencies must accept them, let's not forget that the agencies get paid per day , per resident. Every vacancy means that the shelter agency is getting paid less so it is in their best interest to keep their beds filled regardless of who fills the beds. It's a business like everything else, and the bottom line is the almighty dollar, and unfortunately the surrounding community and safety of the community is of less importance to the shelter agency. Sorry, but this is the reality, and I have many years of experience working in the shelter system on Long Island.

If you take Union Avenue going west all the way to the end (Hawkins Avenue), make a left and the train station is right in front of you. Make a right at that corner (Railroad Avenue). That road turns into Johnson Avenue right after you pass the railroad. At that point, there is a large tract of land on the left hand side. That is where they planned to build the shelter.

Interesting. Thanks. I know where you are talking about. I didn't know that is called Railroad Ave as I go on it everyday and I know the road behind the station is called Railroad.

Re: Holbrook and Ronkonkoma residents
This a residental area. There are homes facing this proper as well as the side streets. As I posted earlier this is right within eye shot of my home. It has nothing to do with property value for myself and my DH. Yes living near the train station itself was an adjustment for many reasons but unfortunately a shelter can house people who do have "clean" records. What is the recidivist level for most sexual offenders, petty thiefs, etc? It is high. So my concern is my safety, their a lot of young families that live in this area. This is my concern. I agree this is a very touchy situation, with no real answer. It is what it is but it still sparks fears and concerns. If god forbid I found myself in a bad way one day I would hope I could find a place like this you are right but if this is not going to be just for homeless, but for criminals too this is a real issue.

It won't be specifically for criminals. It's just that they can't turn someone away if they have a record. BTW, if the person has an outstanding warrant, they're probably not going there either. I'd want to ask what they do to keep drugs and alcohol out of the shelter.
