Re: Holiday Train Ride??

Call the Whippany Rail Road - it is near Morristown, NJ on 287. A lot closer than PA. Alternatively there is the Strassberg rail road on the PA/NJ border. http://www.whippanyrailwaymuseum.net/

If you wanted to go a little further out in NJ there is Northlandz. It is an enormous indoor model RR.

Re: Holiday Train Ride??

You will probably find that many Polar Express train rides are sold out by now. One in western Mass typically sells out in August! The one along the Delaware River (PA/NJ border) sold out 3 weeks ago. Others may be still selling tickets - order sooner rather than later Chat Icon (translation - don't wait 2 weeks)

Santa Trains Rides are a different matter. You mentioned PA but there are many rides in NJ, NY and CT as well - all hours drive closer to LI than Pa would be.

For northern NJ and north central NJ I recommend starting here: http://www.santatrain.net/ Those listings are all not-for-profit organizations; ie no theme parks are listed there.

A 'work in progress' site that has many listings for most of the lower 48 states is http://www.santastrainrides.com/ It's moving to a faster server soon.

Disclosure : I am the maintainer and creator respectively of those websites above. Helping parents find the closest rides is their sole purpose. There is no before/during/after sale gimmickry there - just links to info!

Essex Steam Train in CT might have the daytime tickets available. I believe the night ones are sold out. We bought ours back in August

Re: Holiday Train Ride??

Polar Express Rides are the ones that sell out earlier and by having a licensing fee are more expensive too ($18-$24 pp typically).

It looks like an amplification of the Santa Train Ride point is needed:

Santa Train Ride tickets ($5 - $14 pp) atypically start to go on sale in early to mid October. They will take until 2 weeks from the December ride dates to sell out. Some Santa Train Rides offer November rides in addition to December. Those November rides sell out sooner - mid October to 1st week of November.

There are a few train ride sites in the NY/NJ/CT/PA area that are offering BOTH Santa Train Rides AND Polar Express Rides. Dig into those sites above to find them. An example someone mentioned above Essex Steam Train - Valley Railroad Essex, Connecticut.

Don't get discouraged - use this frustration to step up your search and find a Santa Train Ride trip not yet sold out! A side benefit is you can go to a different one (Polar Express or location) next year to keep the 'newness' factor.

FWIW the littlest ones (1-4 yo) tend to do better on Santa Train Rides as they're not as 'busy' with activities.
