Home Alone - poll
When you leave your dog home alone for long periods of time (like when you go to work), where does he/she stay? Please also post the size dog you have - thanks!

Re: Home Alone - poll
Free reign - he's a Sheltie.
When he was a little puppy, we crated him when we were gone. He is now 3 (my how time flies) and can go where ever he wants in the house.

Re: Home Alone - poll
Molly rules the house. She is about 10 pounds now. We started her out in one little room for a while. Then we gated off the top floor. Now she just roams free.
When we get the next little puppy we'll do the same thing with him.

Re: Home Alone - poll
I have a JRT almost 3 and a Border Collie almost 6. They have free reign of the house except for my bedroom because I don't want them on the bed. The JRT was crated untill about 8 months ago. He had a tendency to be destructive but seems to have outgrown that. The border collie has always had free run. I like the fact that she can go anywhere in the house if someone is trying to get in.

Re: Home Alone - poll
Rocky was in the crate for about 2 months. THen he was sectioned in the back part of the house for about a month. Now, for over half a year he has free reighn. But when nobodys home he's either a) sleeping on my dads side of the bed bc hes my dad's stalker or b) sleeping by the couch next to the front door waiting for someone to come home.
eta forgot to add he's 11-12 lbs.

Ebony is 11, weight 98 lbs. He has free reign of the house. But as a puppy, we kept him in the kitchen and yard until he grew out of his chewing stage...

Re: Home Alone - poll
When we are at work, she is in the crate.
On the weekends, since we are in and out, she is free in the house (1st floor only with DR and LR gated off).
We are gradually moving towards no crate!
We have an 80 lb Golden Retriever <~~~~~~~~ She will be 2 in July and has occassional chewing "incidents"!

Re: Home Alone - poll
I section my dogs to one floor of the house using a baby gate. Wiggles is blind and falls down the stairs and sometimes through the railing from the first floor all the way down to the ground floor when left unattended. Rascal is orally fixated and will search for things to devour in my absence.
ETA: My dogs are small -- Rat Terrier and Italian Greyhound.

Re: Home Alone - poll
Bruno (aka porkie the yorkie) is a whopping 12 lbs. He used to be confined to the kitchen by a gate until we felt he could be trusted more and now he has the freedom of the house but chooses to spend most of the time sleeping on our couch or bed.

Katie is crated anytime we are not home and at night. The crate is in the bedroom with the AC set to 72 and the radio is on. I come home to let her out on my lunch break. She is about 13lbs.
ETA: She is 7 months old.

Re: Home Alone - poll
Our dog is 90 lbs and we live in an apartment in Manhattan. He's got free reign. He's 5 years old...when he was a puppy we had him in a crate with the door open to the kitchen...so he only was allowed in the kitchen alone for a while.

Re: Home Alone - poll
Lola (10lbs and almost 8 months) is really never left alone, but when she is she has the whole house. I started gating her in 1 room, then that moved to 1 level, but now she goes where ever she wants.

Re: Home Alone - poll
M-W-F in a crate and our neighbor walks her 2x a day (we do pay her a small amt but she's also just a really nice lady.) T-Th she goes to daycare from 7-7 and loves it there. I would take her more but it's $$.
She weighs 13 and half lbs. ETA: 7 mos. old. I think age has more to do with crating or not than size.

Re: Home Alone - poll
I crated her until she was 2 years old and then gradually gave her more and more time out of the crate. Now I trust her with full reign of the house. And boy is she mean looking if someone tried to break in........she scares the UPS man He should only know she would attack him with kisses!

Re: Home Alone - poll
My dog is 18 pounds...she was always crated (we have had her for almost 2 years) she seemed to love her crate. Just recently, we began leaving her out of the crate with free rome when we leave the house (about 1-2 hours at a time)
So far, so good. I think we will always have the crate open for her though in case she wants to cozy up in there when we are not home
