Home Improvement labor
We have a guy that was recommended through someone I worked with who does home improvement. He does do floors, not sure about ceramic (will find out on Monday), but he doesn't charge per job, he has a flat rate of $50 per hour no matter what the job. Do you think this is a good price to have someone install ceramic floor? How long do you think it will take? We do have hardwoods that will have to be pulled up, not sure if that's something we can do to save money. The bad thing is that he's 3 weeks out.

Re: Home Improvement labor
Really? We have no idea what something like this would cost normally. We haven't been to stores yet so we have nothing to compare it to. I would have thought a store would be more expensive?
What should labor for floors cost? Thanks!

I agree $50 an hour is steep. We pay $275 a day and he works 9-4 and doesn't take a lunch.

Re: Home Improvement labor
never pay a per hour rate. they could take weeks to complete a very simple job and it could cost you far more than you expected to spend.

Re: Home Improvement labor
Thanks everyone!!! I'll definitely keep looking.
I thought about Home Depot, but I thought they would be horrible at the installation? Their customer service is horrible? Do you think they would be good?
I also found some flooring stores by me, do you think I should go there? Thanks!

There is nothing wrong with paying a per hour rate if the rate is reasonable and you work with somebody that's decent.
I have a laundry list of hanymen that will work for 20-25 an hour and they all do good work and don't milk the job.
I find that paying per hour is best for both parties. The homeowner doesn't overpay for a job that has a huge markup. And the contractor doesn't get any surprises from the job that may end up taking longer than they anticipated.
Of couse this is Long Island where the workers are plentiful. North Carolina may be different.
ETA: It's a shame you aren't in NY because I have a great tile guy that's cheap. He is young and just starting out, but he teaches the tile classes at Home Depot so he knows what he is doing. Very meticulous.
