HOMEOWNERS: What percentage of your salary goes into your 401k ???

I am currently putting the max in.... 15%.

But I am most likely going to have to lower this if I buy a house.... probably by half.

I am not thrilled with doing it... since I have been trained to put the max in for a while now.

But I guess it can't be too bad knowing that even though you aren't contributing as much to your 401k... your money is going into something else that gains value (house).

And if you aren't putting anything into a 401k or retirement... and wish to share... please do so.

DH and I both put the max in. We didn't change it when we bought a house and we haven't touched any of our retirement savings.

I am pretty certain DH puts 10%.
I put in 2% which my company has matched $3+ for the last 5 years.

I hear what you are saying. I am just so trained to put in the max. If I lower it... it will probably bother me.

DW found out how much money I was actually putting in there... and she was like holy Chat Icon Chat Icon .

She thinks I would be able to retire by the time I am 50 at that rate. Chat Icon I don't believe so.

But I am still toying around with what I should do. I obviously don't have to touch my 401k numbers while I am DJing. But I have to think ahead of that.

I put in 10%. My DH puts in 10% until he hits the max the IRS will allow, then stops it for the remainder of the year. I am a financial planner, so I try to practice what I preach - we'll skip something we want if it means keeping up with at least the 10%.

Well the IRS allows about 12k a year for 401k (not sure of the number).

Since you are a financial planner... what would you recommend for a 30 year old to be putting in right now? I know thats a broad question.

What if I could swing about 7k a year into my 401k instead of 12k.... would that be acceptable?

Even if I do cut back on my 401k a little... its not like I would then be putting pennies in.

I didn't want to get personal and ask eveyone in this thread how much they are putting in (in dollars)... I just asked for percentages...

It is possible that somebody that says they are only putting 10% in... could actually be putting in a larger amount than somebody putting 20% cause the former guy has a much higher salary.

DH puts in what his company matches, and then we invest additional money in other vehicles. He works in investment research, so he feels like he can get a better return than a mutual fund, but to not get the company match is just throwing money away.

One thing to consider is that although you will be putting less money into a retirement account, most people sell their home when they retire and move into something smaller and easier to maintain, so you should have money from your home sale to live off as well. Plus, as your salary increases, hopefully you can gradually increase your investments again.
