you definitely need homeowners insurance before you're clear to close. it's usually done after the appraisal. if you already have car insurance start with your agent. if not start calling companies for quotes for both. multi-line gives you better deals. i used state farm.

The homeowners insurance company will usually fax a binder directly to your mortgage bank - it is one of the conditions of your mortgage commitment that you get the homeowners ins before you close.
We just called a few companies for rates and wound up using State Farm

Your bank will not allow you to get the mortgage without this.

You need proof of homeowner's insurance at closing. You can just call around for quotes if you like- I started this way but do to my dog having a bite history I ended up using a broker- she was awesome. Her fee was worth every penny. When I was looking last March Travelers offered great rates for homeowners and auto insurance packages.

Call around for different quotes or go through a broker. They're going to need quite a bit of information about the house to give a quote. So make sure you have the appraisal in front of you. The process is rather quick. You'll need it before the mortgage company clears you to close. It's one of the requirements. But it will go into effect the day you close.
