Homework?

Will you share how much your children get, and what grade they are in? Also, do they get HW on the weekends?

My son is in kindergarten. We get a packet every Monday, due on Friday, with 8 or 9 dittos. We have reading every weekend, and sometimes a family project.

Pretty much the same for DD, who is also in K. DS is in 3rd grade, and he has a couple of dittos for each topic (math, science, english) each night. He has a writing assignment once in a while.
DW handles most of the homework stuff, since she's home with the kids after school, so I don't know all of the details.

Re: Homework?

Both the boys have really reasonable amounts of work and I'm THRILLED.

Robbie has a a spelling assignment and points list that he was given in the beginning of the year. Each week he has to do 45 points worth of spelling. He either uses the 20 assigned words OR 10 words that he chooses if he gets a 100 on the pre-test. He also has a current events assignment weekly - reading and writing about a world or local event and how it effects him and then presenting to the class. There's usually a math sheet and sometimes a reading comprehension or science ditto. Homework is M-Thursday. The only time he has weekend work is when he has a special project due.. like his recent report on a US President with timeline and fun facts and next up his science fair project. He will sometimes have extra work assigned from his challenge program or mathletes that he wants to work on also. He is in 5th grade. He is usually done with homework within 40 minutes of getting home.

Noah is in 3rd grade and has homework sheets sent home Monday - Thursday. Usually 1 math sheet and maybe a reading or vocab sheet. He also has spelling weekly - review, write, study. He hasn't had any projects that have carried into the weekend yet. Noah takes a while with his work.. he's prone to distraction and needs snacks and gets sidetracked easily. He usually is done within an hour and a half... but sometimes it takes longer..

They are asked to do 20 minutes of reading nightly, but we actually require at least a half hour daily. They also have music. Noah is required 5 minutes of recorder per day and Robbie does 30 minutes of sax per day. Reading and music are done every day of the week.

Re: Homework?

My son had similar amounts of work when he was in K. He also had weekly book reports and family projects throughout the year.

In first grade, he gets a lot more homework that is due every Monday:
~ 6-8 Math sheets
~ 5-6 Reading comprehension sheets
~ 10 weekly spelling words where each night he has to do something different with the words like 5x each, sentences, story, ABC order. Then a test on Monday.

PLUS reading 20 min night and a project once a month.

Re: Homework?

DS gets a homework packet on Mondays that lists what is due for each day. Its usually a ditto for math, a ditto for writing, and then assignments that are done in his homework book. He doesn't get homework on the weekends. We also read a book every night.

Re: Homework?

1st grade:
1 math sheet
1 other sheet (language/reading)
1 spelling activity
15 minutes of reading

This is per night and my son can complete his hw reather quickly (outside of reading - like 20minutes on average).

In kindergarten he got much more homework. He'd get 2-3 sheets a night often double sided (or bonus on the back) and then 15 minutes of reading. While it wasnt difficult homework it was time consuming - lots of steps and coloring. My son didn't complain but if he was a kid who struggled - I am sure it would have been worse.

DS is in 3rd grade he has HW M - Th
ELA & Math assignment every night
- ELA is a workbook - new words each week, spelling, short writing assignment, vocabulary building
- Math is one or two worksheets
- Science, Social Studies worksheets are sprinkled in maybe once a week.
- Reading Comprehension packets come home at the beginning of the week every other week
- Various monthly projects, last month he had to make a book that gave step by step directions on how to do something
- Reading 20 min per day

Exclusive of reading some days he can focus and be done easily in 30 - 40 minutes, days that he trouble focusing can be easily an hour - 1.15

1st grader

She has at least 2 math dittos a night.
She has an assignment to do with her spelling words every night
Then she has at least one other thing a night, which depends on the day. (sometimes poetry, sometimes ss or science).

She has her reading books that come home once a week and in addition is asked to read 20 minutes a night.

Re: Homework?

wow! It seems like the other kindergarteners and 1st graders get a lot more than I thought!!!

My DD is in K and gets one ditto a night. just one. once in awhile she has spelling words to study for a test. Thats it. I am guessing we will be in for a rude awakening when she starts 1st grade LOL.

Oh, she gets no homework on Fridays.

Re: Homework?

DS is in kindergarten. They get a packet on Monday's. At the beginning it was due on Friday but I think some parents complained and now it's due the following Monday. It usually has about 10 double sided pages. He also has his word wall binder to add to and memorize.

Too much!

The 1st and 2nd grade teachers my kids have had are insane. They are in
1st and 3rd grade G&T classes in Queens.

I don't believe G&T should = more HW.

Every night she traces and writes her last name twice (already did first name in the first half of the year)

Every night trace and write letter of the week four times

In addition....

Tuesday....math hw, ditto or pages in math book

Wed....letter activity sheet and math sheet

Thurs...read a book, write the title and talk about book with an adult.

Re: Homework?

E1 is in K. Her weekly packet consists of:

M - Alphabet Notebook; writing the letter of the week in upper and lower case 5 times each.

T - 1-2 worksheets. they vary - math, vocab, matching.

W - Worksheet, book report or creative project of the week (this week its coloring a kite)

Th - Picture Dictionary. She has to draw or cut out two items that start with the letter of the week, and write the words. They discuss in class the next day.

In addition to the above assignments, she's to read (or be read to) every night.

Its a reasonable amount. I've heard about kids getting a lot more in K. I'm happy with what she has.
