Homework during break?
Did any of your kids get homework during the break? DS got a packet on 12/17 with 31 pages of math, reading and language arts. I understand trying to keep the concepts fresh in their mind over the two weeks, but come on.
It's been a battle to get him to focus to do them because to him he's on vacation. Today DH started giving him incentive - for every sheet he completes he gets 10 min of video game time. So far he's done 4

Re: Homework during break?
We got homework as well but only about 10 pages in total. My son is in K though.
I don't know how old yours is, but 31 pages does seem a little excessive.

Re: Homework during break?
I don't know how old your child is - but my child is in preK and Im disappointed that the teacher didn't even give one worksheet out to the kids. I think it motivates them to learn and also its encouraging because they know the teacher wants to see it. I've been spending some time with her every day so far doing our own worksheets - just b/c i think its important.
BUT - I do have to agree - 31 pages is excessive - holy cow!! A page for every day of the week while on vacation is fine - but that seems to be alot. I hate to say this but it seems like the teachers are slacking in their department and giving the parents the job of doing all ths work with our kids -

He's in kindergarten also...It's a gifted program, but I also think it's excessive. I was hoping I could get a break also.
Today there's been less whining because he is getting to play video games. He just asked to do another one because he wanted to play 10 more mins...LOL

I teach first grade and we are not allowed to (nor do I want to!) give any homework. Let the vacation be a true vacation, I say!

Just curious - Why are you not allowed to give homework? Just wondering - b/c some teachers do it and some do not, is it a teacher's choice, district decision, principal? I don't get it.

I'm pretty sure it's a district policy (it's at the very least, a school policy). We're also not allowed to give HW over the weekend.

Poor kids - hw on break...my son is in kindergarten and didn't get any homework over break - thank goodness! He needs a break. But I did tell him the teacher said he needs to practice his reading as homework every day!

Wow, I wish that was the case in Chicago... He gets homework M-Th and every Monday he has a "book report" due, where he has to read a book, draw a picture and write a sentence about his favorite part.
He isn't struggling with the work, he complains sometimes but once he gets started he goes through it pretty fast. I'm just wondering if getting so much of it is necessary. I just don't remember having that much work, but then again things are a lot more competitive than when we were in school.
Maybe I'm just annoyed cuz I'm stressed at work, tired and didn't expect this much work in K.

My son is also in the gifted program but for some reason he didn't get that much for this week. Actually, I was kind of bummed out they didn't get to do a mini book report like they always do. They get a new book to read every week and then have to write answers a few question based on the book. I guess he gave them a break this time.
A few parents in our class were complaining that there isn't enough homework, and some complain that there is too much. The teacher's thing is that they are still KIDS, even if they are G&T and they shouldn't be overburdened.
I completely agree that 31 pages is WAY too much. I have noticed that some parents of gifted kids have a tendency to constantly push them further and further and forget that those little people are still CHILDREN and need to enjoy their childhood, no matter how smart they supposedly are.I notice that in my son's class. Perhaps the teacher was compelled to give more homework based on parental requests. You should definitely speak to the teacher and express your concern over the situation....

Re: Homework during break?
I teach second grade and gave no HW over the break.
My kids are in K and 2 and got no HW.
I think HW over a vacation is ridiculous and unnecessary. I'm glad neither my district nor my home district support the concept. Everyone needs a break, especially small children! 10 days isn't enough time for them to lose concepts previously taught. In fact, I'm giving a math unit test on the Tuesday we return. They BETTER NOT have forgotten the material!

Re: Homework during break?
DS is in K and got an optional homework packet. He can do what he wants, but we don't hand it in.
There were a few fun activities I picked out for him to do, so it's not torture to start up in Jan.

Re: Homework during break?
Non of my kids got hw for over the break, however 20mins a day I have had my 5yr old practice his letters and numbers just so he doesn't forget any. I was a little nervous letting him go over a wk without practicing.
