Honest opinions about people using their snow blower at 5:30am

So DH HAD to go to work yesterday. he started the snow blower up at 530am. yeah it stinks and we felt really bad, but his job is in the emergency field so he has no choice but to go

some of our neighbors know what he does so we hope they understood. he was extremely respectfully to the extent that he could be, he parked his car at the end of the driveway and only did in front of his car not the whole driveway so it was used at the bare minimum. I could barely hear it in my house, but not sure if anyone else did.

Rude or not?

I don't think it's rude since it's not done every week.
With the weather we've been having I think it's understandable.

How is he supposed to get to work to provide emergency services if he can't properly dig himself (and you) out first?

DH is in emergency services too - - so I'm pretty sympathetic.

If someone has to work (even if it's not in the emergency field, but they need to support their family), I don't see a problem with running the snowblower.

i said other i don't think your dh was rude and i think for his purpose it totally makes sense. i think during the weekdays especially people need to show up for work (not all of us can take the day) on the weekend i do feel MOST people shouldn't use it that early but if you know your neighbor is in fireman/nurse/med/emerg. service then how can you complain?

I think it's probably annoying to some but really it doesn't snow every day. Most people who work probably were up about that time figuring out what was happening with their job or digging themselves out.

I wouldn't worry too much.

Re: Honest opinions about people using their snow blower at 5:30am

i believe our DH's have the same job, and mine also had to work yesterday... except we don't have a snowblower so he was out there at 5am with a shovel lol.
as someone in a similar position, i say it's understandable.

HOWEVER... if chauncey next door is out there with his snowblower at 5:30, simply to get his property cleared with no intention of leaving his house or anything, I'd probably be annoyed.

Not rude. Necessary.

I wouldn't start or idle my snowblower under my neighbor's window but I can't imagine anyone deciding that 5:30am is the ideal time to plow their property unless they had to for whatever reason, emergency or otherwise.

I wouldn't worry about it. Your DH sounds more than respectful about it, if someone had an issue, it's ridiculous.

i wouldn't worry the plows are louder then the snw blower - in my area it is common to see people's driveways plowed before 6 - my rea is big for getting trains to the city

Honestly? I'd probably sleep right through it, lol. But no, definitely not rude. He had to go to work. It's not like he couldn't sleep, was bored, and decided to go out and do it on a Saturday morning Chat Icon

Not as bad as doing it at 1:15 amChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta: This was done and the person was not emergency personnel.

Anyone in this field, they can snow blow any time of the day, I understand that.

i don't think it should matter what you do for a living.. if you have to go to work and dig yourself out you have to... thats that! Its snow... its out of your control and i would lthink most neighbors would understand that.

now if it was a lawn mower every wknd that would be a whole different story!

well technically suffolk was under a snow emergency which means your supposed to stay off the roads so some people (not me) think that you shouldn't be going anywhere

If someone's up that early, I'd assume it was a necessity so while I might be aggravated, I'd realize I was wrong and I certainly would not say anything.

Ask me about people who set off fireworks on NYE or for 2-3 days BEFORE and AFTER 4th of July. Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA- from now on, regardless, I will have DH dig our car out ASAP. There were a few minutes yesterday when I wondered if we were going to have to take my DD to the ER because she was sick- and while we could have called an ambulance I wouldn't have felt comfortable with the car being stuck. But I'm also a big worrywart.

If it's a weekday, I would assume that person has to go to work, be jealous that they have a snowblower, and go back to bed.

Nothing rude about it.

Lawnmower at 5:30 am is another story!

Re: Honest opinions about people using their snow blower at 5:30am

it doesn't snow everyday, so i feel its not rude at all.

my dad had a major surgery several years ago and had to be in manhattan at 7am --- of course, we got a giant snow/ice storm that night. due to the nature of his injury, he couldn't remove the snow, so my brother and sister and I were outside at 4am with the shovels, snowblower, ice chipper, and whatever else it took to get him into the city.... no one complained.

Ditto. My DH had to leave for work yesterday at 5 am. He was out at 4:30 blowing ou his car. He didn't do the front walkway or the sidewalk, just the back of the driveway so he could get out and get to work.

I wouldn't worry about it in the least. Your DH did what he had to do to go to work, it's all understandable. I'm sure your neighbors had no problem.

I say not rude..because I am guilty of a 6AM snowblower. My DH and I started shoveling/snowblowing out our house around 545 because I am a teacher in NYC and needed to get to work and take him to the train.

However, if I were the receiver of the noise while in bed trying to sleep, I would not have been happy.lol!
