Re: Hopefully stopped a small child from making a mistake
I read the post initially when it had the original title, and yes, it did throw me off that the shoplifter was 6 years old.
But after reading and thinking about it I trust the OP's judgement - she could see and get a feel for the situation as a whole, and decided that was the best thing to do. I may have decided to do the same thing if it had been me. Or maybe not. But it's not like she personally called the cops on him.
Regardless, it can't hurt to make an impression on the kid to remind him that stealing is wrong.

Re: Hopefully stopped a small child from making a mistake
My sister was caught stealing when she was about 7 years old. She was pocketing pens from a card store. The store clerk caught her and brought my sister to my Mother and told her what happened. I was with my Mom and was scared for my sister.
my sister was SCARED SHIIT and never stole anything again.

It's much better to learn it at 6 for a candy bar, then be allowed to get away with it until 13, and stealing cars (yes, it's an extreme example, but it does happen....)
....
I was thinking the same thing.
Actually, that's why I don't have a problem with the original title. Maybe you did stop someone from at least growing up to be a shoplifter.
Enough people on LIF have described situations - either in this thread or on others - when they learned a tough lesson as a child and it stuck with them and they made sure to follow it.
I think it could have gone down much worse if you had said something to the mom. Who knows how she would have reacted?
OP, I think a lot of people were hard on you.

Re: Hopefully stopped a small child from making a mistake
I have to admit when I opened this thread a few days ago I Really a 6yo is shoplifting , but I 100% agree with the OP's decision to take action. I may not agree with how she did it, but at the end of the day lets hope that that little boy was explained that taking something that isn't yours is wrong. I think that either way you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. If she would not have said something then people would be outraged that she in some way condoned that behavior and gave him a "free" pass on stealing, she did something and now people are saying she should have minded her own buisness.....you can't win to lose these days I have been thinking about this for a few days...not because he stole, but WHY did he steal. That is the tough part. Nobody wants to see a kid do bad, and in this case it makes my mind wander as to why he did it. OP you made a judgement call and I applaude you for doing SOMETHING
