horrible evening...our first boo-boo (warning to other parents)

this is our oven. I USED to love it. Now I hate it!External Image

No, she didn't get burned. My DD loves the shiny SS and glass front. Well today she climbed up, like she always does, but her little fingers must have gone in the vent and one got cut and took a chunk out of her skin. We had to take her to the pediatrician, because we were afraid it might need a stitch. They said she'd be ok and no stitches. That happend at 4:30. She seemed ok, we went home, she ate, took a bath and slept for a little but after waking she reopened it again.

I am so upset that I let this happen. I like to think I am cautious with her. Now, I don't know how I can prevent it from happening again, other than yet another place she can't crawl. Needless to say I did write Maytag to inform them on their product flaw.

If anyone has an oven like this, be careful.

I'm very worried about when eryk begins crawling around. our home needs some serious babyproofing.

I'm thinking about simply giving up on the kitchen and just blocking the whole room off..... besides the cleaners, an oven similar to yours and the refrigerator, we also have a tool drawer and even worse.... a very tall pot stand filled with my enameled cast iron pots Chat Icon absolutely no way to babyproof that one (here's a picture of it)

we had that oven in our old house. you should also be careful with the lower oven because with the height of the handle if they are cruising along it doesn't take much leverage for the oven to open. i never let my DS in the kitchen if the oven was on. he was always pulling on it and easily able to open it. we moved when he was 15 months so he was small at the time. i tried to find a safety device to put on it, but i couldn't find any that worked. Re: horrible evening...our first boo-boo (warning to other parents)

The only way to prevent injuries is to keep them in a plastic bubble. Even if you keep them away from anything "dangerous", they can still get hurt. DS fell of his chair backwards in Kindergarten, and we had to take him to the ER because he was vomiting (After the CAT scan came back OK, I think it was a virus that was going around, but you can never be too careful with head injuries).

I mean, how can you keep DC off of chairs? They will always find ways of hurting themselves..... Chat Icon

There will be so many more injuries from so many unlikely places - you are not a bad mommy, they find things we would never dream of them getting injured on.

You're not a bad mommy. These kinds of things happen to all of us. Unfortunately we can't put our children in bubble wrap.

I hope her boo-boo heals quickly.

Poor thing!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Don't be too hard on yourself, these things do happen and while it's upsetting in the moment, they are SO resilient!!!! I'm glad she's OK now!!
Wannabemom, that pot stand is SCARY, and I know you're a 'foodie' so you probably have great (HEAVY) pots and pans on there Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Our apartment is filled with toddler horrors too, we're going to need some SERIOUS babyproofing before DS starts crawling!!!!
