Horrible weekend
My grandma died yesterday morning after being rushed in for emergency surgery. There was zero chance of her ever coming off a vent. My husband and I had been there all night until 5 am when the surgery was over, and went home to sleep for a couple hours bc her doctors said that she would likely be intubated for a few days, but they did not at all think that she wouldn't come off it. Then during those couple hours she spiraled and coded once, and was able to be resuscitated, but it was clear that she was never coming off. I didn't even know about the first code until we were about 20 minutes away (going from Brooklyn to West Islip) and my mom texted me that basically we needed to hurry. My mom was her health care proxy and was debating what to do, but was keeping her alive no matter what until we got there. A few minutes after we got there she coded again...but my mom decided not to go through with it.
Hearing the code called over the loudspeaker and seeing doctors start running through the halls, and then hearing the code cancelled and then just stop... I'm not going to forget that any time soon.
The funeral is today... I don't know how any of us are going to get through it. I haven't seen my husband cry since our wedding, and he lost it today.
