I would speak with the social worker at the hospital. Hopefully they can get your family member approved for medicaid.
Good Luck!

every hopsital is required to have a charity care program as well. It willl give a big reduction on the bills, dependent upon income and situation. You should ask for a patient advocate or social worker to come see this person while they are in the hospital.

absolutely in fact there are now signs all over that say "worried about paying your medical bills"with numbers to the financial assistance unit. In addition, the social worker can help you determine if your family member is medicaid eligible and the hospital will even do your application for you/with you.

I have never been through this but I am sure there is help someplace. My medical bills were over $90,000 and I can't imagine if I had to pay them without insurance!!

Re: hospitalization and medical treatment with no insurance
I know someone who was hospitalized and then put in a nursing home- she did not have insurance-she was elderly-her husband/family did not pay a dime- she went through many surgeries and was in a coma for 6 months- she recently died- but it was a year and half battle and no one paid a cent-DEF. speak to the social worker they will find ways to help the family out ETA: This was at Yale New Haven Hospital in CT

Which hospital? I know that Stony Brook has financial aid which can wipe away up to 95% of the bill and I believe up to 70% can be waived at practicing SB physicians of subsequent visits.
