Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
Its my son's birthday and I am going to have some of the family over. What would you do for food? If people want to BYO, that's fine but I am not telling anyone to do that. That's just too tacky for me.
My aunt just had a gathering recently and made individual appy, salad and dinner plates for every person but I'm not doing that either. That's for people with time on their hands.
Should I order pizza and guests can just grab a slice? Should I BBQ and just give the food to them on their individual plate right off the grill? Should I just order wraps? Or any other suggestions?

I would just order food like I normally would and let people make their own plates. If you have to go through the hassel of making individual everything to avoid the spread of Covid then its not worth getting together.

I wouldn't do pizza, or anything type of platter that people have to actually touch the food to get theirs. A BBQ with food going right from BBQ to plate sounds like a good idea.

I’d also order food as normal. If you want to be extra cautious, designate someone to serve the food and make sure he/she wears gloves the whole time.

I am having some family over on the 21st for a combo father's day/DD's 4th birthday celebration. We are doing BBQ- the usual burgers, hot dogs, chicken, salads, etc. We will put everything on trays and have tongs and serving spoons, but honestly that is not any different than how we did things before COVID.

Re: Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
Just do food as normal. If someone isn't comfortable they can bring their own food.
The only thing I would avoid is like communal dips and stuff- because you don't know who may be a double dipper.

Re: Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
DH and I have had people over a few times, and we've just asked in advance what they were comfortable with.
One time, the couple wanted to bring their own food. Another time, the couple was fine with us doing the cooking. The third time, everyone had kind of different opinions, so we did a mix. We ordered individually wrapped tacos and individually packaged slices of cheesecake, but we also ordered a pizza and wings (I know this seems like a random cluster of food, but it's what people wanted lol).

If you want to do pizza, you can always serve it yourself to each person with clean hands- this way everyone isn't touching and grabbing it. Just have one person plate and serve.

IMO if people feel comfortable enough to come over to your house for a party, I’m sure they’ll be fine with however you serve food. Even if there was an open platter of hotdogs and hamburgers, I would hope that normally people aren’t touching five of them before they pick one up.

I agree with this. I was starting to get relaxed with everything, but I found out yesterday that my brother has Covid & is really sick. He’s not in the hospital & seems to be getting better. He lives in PA & has been working from home. He’s only been to Costco & to pick up take out...so he thinks he forgot to wash his hands immediately from returning from one of those places. It’s scary, they are in a pretty spread out suburb.
So I would make plates for everyone & have them come up individually & grab them.

This!
But I would still give guests a heads up about what your food plan is, and mention that if they aren't comfortable with it they can bring their own food.

Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
I think it's fine. When we went to a BBQ for Memorial Day, they just put everything on platters and we just served ourselves. For the chips, they didn't put them in bowls. They just kept the bags out on the table and people poured the chips into their own plates. No one put their hands in the bag; they just poured. Otherwise, it was just like normal.

Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
I went to a BBQ this past weekend - everyone used tongs to grab the food, they did have individual chip bags which was nice and also had individual butter packets for corn (a little extra, but nice).
Most people I know would also have no problem with pizza. Just keep some hand sanitzer out and I think you are fine!

Re: Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
I’m having three families over and am ordering each family their own pizza pie (or pies) and a salad each with their own table and their own utensils, individual chip bags, water bottles etc.
For cake I will wear gloves and a mask and distribute on clean plates.
I am so pathetically excited lol.

Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
I was thinking about this also. I invited family over for the 4th of July weekend. It will be the first time we are all seeing each other (would be about 10-12 of us). I wanted to make/buy the easiest options for people can just grab ‘n go. I also plan on buying the individual bags of chips so no one is sharing from the same bowl.

I wouldn't serve differently than normal other than no dip or finger foods because it grosses me out. I would also make everyone hang sanitize before handling anything, including yourself. And remind your kids

This.
Keep some hand sanitizer pumps around and be sure to clean the bathroom every so often (light switch, handles, etc)

I was thinking about how much less calories I would eat at a party if I was limited to snack sized bag of chips. This sounds like a trick out of a Weight Watchers play book LOL

Re: Hosting a gathering - what to do for food?
I wouldn't do buffet style. If you are, I think one person in gloves should be serving and everything should be covered. like closed and then opened to serve and reclosed. so If it's pizza, keep it in the cardboard box and make sure its closed so it's not sitting out with peoples spit getting on it etc... and only one person should be serving out from that box...
Parties at this time are very crazy because you have no idea what some people are comfortable or uncomfortable with. It'll be hard to please everyone.
I agree that as much closed container self serve as you can. individual juice boxes and cans, not like big bottles everyone has to touch and pour or even those nice big lemonade/infused water type servers -- keep those away from now. too many touch points of multiple hands. individual bags of chips/popcorn, rather than the bowl of them out. Maybe wrapped cheese sticks instead of like a cheese platter lol
