Hotels in London

Any recommendations for a family friendly hotel in London that costs about $200 or less a night?

I stayed at claridges. It's like 600$ a night. Totally unnecessary. I'll try and get the name of another hotel we stayed at as well. I liked it better.

This is the hotel I liked better http://southplacehotel.com

Re: Hotels in London

Finding a hotel in Zone 1, possibly Zone 2, for under $200 a night is going to be difficult. I've usually just stayed for free because of points or DH's business trips there.

What time of year do you plan to go? Are you open to staying outside of central London? Like Zone 3 or 2?

Check out Air B&B. You can probably find something there.

Re: Hotels in London

Not family friendly at all since it is more business oriented, but we stayed at Club Quarters at a good rate - Don't remember how much now, though. Rooms were nice, and we were out most of the time.

We stayed at Rubens at the Palace. Such a cute hotel with English decor. It's across from Buckingham Palace and easy access to the tube.

Re: Hotels in London

What areas are most convenient to stay in? For example is area of Buckingham Palace preferable?

I'm also planning a family trip and have no idea about locations.

Depends what you want to do.

I think the immediate area around Buckingham Palace is boring, IMO.

I'd try to stay close to a Tube stop. I really like the area by Tottenham Court Road tube stop. You can walk on Oxford Street and it's a good place to base yourself. I also think the area by Victoria station is a good place to base yourself, but it's not the prettiest. I stayed once by Westminster and Big Ben, but it seemed slightly out of the way from the center.

However, I think my wants when I go to London would be different from your wants (I just shop and go out to eat and drink; I've seen all the major sites).

We will have 3 days including day we arrive. Planning to to changing of the guard at Buckingham palace, tower of London, westminster Abby, London Eye, show at West end and day trip to Harry Potter Studio.
From your suggestions I have a lot of researching to do still....lol. I have no idea where tube stops are

Based on that, I'd get something along the circle or district lines (yellow and green).

The tube is really easy to use (it puts NYC subways to shame).

This link is helpful

In the guide books they usually have the tube stop listed near the attraction.

I really loved The Royal Horseguards hotel...right down the road from Big Ben & walking distance to most sites you mentioned.
