House Expenses...what are they?

ok..so I know what our mortgage payment will be with taxes and insurance.

Can someone give me an idea of what other monthly payments go towards a house? I want to make sure we're ok before we take the house plunge!
I already know:
I have Cable $120
Electric?
Oil?

what else?

Re: House Expenses...what are they?

I have oil in my NY house and I never paid on a monthly plan. We put a brand new burner in so we just paid for a service contract with a local company (around 195 for the year) and we got COD fill ups. (it was cheaper that way)

In the winter, mine was about $500 every 5 weeks (that was based on $2.89). It is really expensive now.

All of the above plus we have to pay for garbage as well since it's not through the town (it equals out to about $25/month).

This is key. Annual maintenance like hot water heater flushes, gutter cleaning, HVAC inspection, chimney cleaning, carpet cleaning (if you have carpet), caulking, any extermination necessary, landscape maintenance (mulch, plants, seeding, equipment) sealing the deck when needed, alarm system if you need one, home owners assoc. fees, powerwashing, dryer vent cleaning....stuff like this. Much of it you can do yourself for less, but none of it is free.

Yup! First year in our house we had to put a new roof on part of the house, they found alot of rotted wood around our front window that was not there during inspection. We ended up having to put an indoor french drain and sump in our finished basement (basement had been newly finished when the house went on the market).

Our first year alone in the house just for surprise repairs, we put in almost $30k! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: House Expenses...what are they?

I want to make a suggsetion, if at all possible try to get a home with Natural gas. We had oil and converted to Natural gas, last year was 500 a month for oil, this year was less than 200 a month for gas.
The burner will pay for itself in no time.
No deliveries and who knows where oil prices will be next winter.

Just My Opinion!!!!!

Plan for the "unexpected" expenses as well. Such as weddings/showers/engagements/birthdays/christenings, plumbing, appliances breaking, gutter cleanings, seasonal items, etc.

I agree too. We converted to gas before we even moved in. So glad we did. Our gas was was a little over $200 for the winter. We use gas for heating and cooking.
