House Insurance really is an issue here in LI
So far one agent couldn't find us anyone to insure us, so now we have two other agents looking for us. It seems that insurance companies now do not want to write policies for the rest of the year for anything below Sunrise Highway (?.) We have probably another week or two before we get an exact closing date so I hope we can find something by then.
I just figured to put it out there since I know a few more people have been dealing with this issue as well and wanted to warn any new home buyers that they may come across this issue and to start early on shopping around as soon as you are in contract.
I also am hearing many people with coverage already are having their policies canceled for no reason so they are shopping around as well.

yup this happened to my inlaws, they have been with liberty mutal since 1982, same house never made a claim, and they got dropped with 2 months notice, because they are to close to the water. this just happened last month
Sooo upsetting, they did find a new company to insure them, i forget the name but will get the info.

When I bought my house 2.5 years ago, it was very difficult to find insurance b/c we are so close to the water. It is possible to find a fair rate, but it's a PITA.

We just got a non-renewal Letter from Traveler's for NO reason, we have been here 11 years and NEVER put in a claim. My agent says that they are dropping people left and right.

this is insanity... how are people supposed to insure their homes? it makes no sense. DH and I had no problems getting insured last year when we bought, thank goodness.
if people can't get insured on LI what do people do that actually live in areas with really bad weather like gulf coast states?

well that is it how are people supposed to buy a home because you can not get a mortgage with out insurance. If you pay 100% cash then you can opt not to have insurance (if your insane) but its really not a option for most. They want people to buy homes to get the economy jump started but yet the insurance companies are not on board with this.

When Allstate dropped everyone, I went to State Farm. I am 2 blocks north of montauk Hwy so I know that they DID write for people South of Sunrise. Try them. My agent is in Lindy if you want the number...

We just bought a house about 3 months ago, we're about 1.5 miles from the water and we had no problem. Pretty sure we have Traveler's.

We are in Lindenhurst as well and the same thing happened to us with All State. We are now with State Farm also.

I'm south of Montauk and have used Ameriprise for years with no problem.
The are formerly a division of Amex, found them through Costco
I think I pay around $295 a month for house, 2 cars and motorcycle

Oh wow.. we're south of Sunrise too.. pretty close to the ocean. Hoping that doesnt happen to us.. we use Nationwide.

yup, this is true - found out yesterday.
we are working with nationwide, liberty mutual will be next if we can't go with nationwide (they use an outside company).

I am sure there are plenty of smaller insurance companies out there that will insure in Long Island. They will probably give better rates too!

I am pretty sure the bigger companies like State Farm and ALlstate, some office are writing some are not. If it's a newer office they can write more polices. It's kind of lame if you ask me.
I went with Roy Reeve agency in Mattituck. (no you don't have to go ther, we did it all over the phone) I used John Johnston. He was the nicest to deal with and I have Countryway Insurance, which was the cheapest. And no hurricane deductible !

Traveler's did the same to me but offered a policy at a higher rate. after i called my agent and she worked the numbers it only came to $200 higher per year. that wasnt so bad, but, they did raise the hurricane deductible from 3% to 5%. i can live with this. at least i have insurance. its a shame whats happening on LI to so many people.

Tri State Consumer (TSC) is a Long Island based company writing for Long Island homes. We went there after Allstate dropped us.
Ironic how the gov't forces Allstate to accept flood insurance polices, so we have our flood insurance thru Allstate.
